Baseball outlasts Brandeis in ten

Box Score

BRISTOL, R.I. – The Roger Williams University Baseball team needed extra innings to pick up a non-conference win Thursday afternoon, defeating Brandeis University 3-2 in 10 innings.

Brandeis delivered a pair of runs in the bottom of the second on RBI sinlges by Sam Miller (Sudbury, Mass.) and Brian Allen (Salem, N.H.) to give the Judges a 2-0 lead. Brandeis' Max Berner (Reisterstown, Md.) pitched stellar over the first seven innings, holding the Hawks hitless through 4.2 innings.

Hawk starter Sean Boyle (Arlington, Mass.) pitched well despite the blemish in the second inning. He ended up going seven innings allowing only those two runs while striking out six.

The Hawks made their move in the eighth inning, with Shawn Cariglio (Milford, Conn.) and Caulin Rogers (Gloucester, Mass.) singling in the frame to put runners at first and second with two outs. Jamie Timothy (Cohasset, Mass.) stepped up to the plate and came through with a 2-run double in the eighth wasn't hard hit, but fell just inside the right field line, tying the game.

After a 1-2-3 ninth for both teams, the Hawks' Mike Barry (Medway, Mass.) reached on a pinch-hit infield single and moved to second on a Trevor Larson (Northbridge, Mass.) sacrifice. After reaching third on a groundout to second, Barry took advantage of a 2-0 wild pitch way inside and scored what would end up being the game-winning run.

Brandeis looked poised to keep the game going in to bottom of the 10th, with pinch runner Ryan Tettemer (Westfield, Mass.) attempting to score from second on a Greg Heineman (Westfield, Mass.) single. Yet Mike Pascarella (Milford, Conn.) would gun him down at the plate, keeping the Judges off the board and helping RWU towards the win.

Tyler Pogmore (Lebanon, Conn.) picked up the win for RWU, pitching a scoreless ninth and tenth. Rogers finished 3-for-4 with a run scored, while Barry was 1-for-1 with two runs scored.

Berner went the distance in the loss for Brandeis, striking out ten in ten innings. He and Heineman finished 2-for-5, while Allen was 2-for-2.

Both teams will be off for the Easter holiday weekend. Roger Williams (19-13) will be back in action on Monday against St. Joseph's College (Maine), while Brandeis (12-13) welcomes Curry College on Tuesday.
