Corsairs win two over Baseball

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 BRISTOL, R.I. – UMass-Dartmouth took both games of a twinbill against the Roger Williams University Baseball team, winning by scores of 4-0 and 4-1.

In the top of the first of the opener, Ryan Medeiros (Acushnet, Mass.) knocked a base hit to left center to lead off the game. George Agostini (Dighton, Mass.) was able to reach on a hit-and-run, as Medeiros was able to beat the throw at second. After the two were sacrificed over to second, Hawk starter Tyler Campo (Wrentham, Mass.) was able to get a strikeout and a ground-out to second to lead UMass-Dartmouth off the board.

The bottom part of the inning saw Reid Nelson (Wallingford, Conn.) draw a lead-off walk and make his way to third on a pair of ground-outs. He would be stranded at third as another ground-out to second allowed UMass-Dartmouth to keep the game scoreless.

Nate Farias (Fall River, Mass. led off the second with a walk, moving over to second with two outs and another walk by Reece Tanguay (Essex Junction, Vt.). Medeiros stepped up and hit a short ball that got caught in the wind and died in front of short, forcing a tough throw to first. Medeiros was able to beat it out, but the throw got past first, allowing Farias to score the first run of the game.

The Hawks threatened in the bottom of the inning, with Mike Pascarella (Milford, Conn.) and Kevin Baker (Wilbraham, Mass.) reaching on a single and error, respectively. Yet Corsair starter Wayne Bolz (Billerica, Mass.) was able to get a foul-out and a strikeout, sandwiched between Cory DeMedeiros (Fall River, Mass.) throwing out Pascarella trying to steal third.

In the fourth, UMass-Dartmouth left the bases loaded, as Medeiros tried to catch the Hawk defense sleeping by dropping a bunt between the mound and third base. Yet Campo was able to get to the ball and make the throw to first and notch the third out of the inning.

In the fifth, Agostini and DeMedeiros led off the frame with back-to-back singles, putting runners at the corners. Alex Newton (Saco, Maine) brought in Agostini with an RBI single for the second run of the game. Chris Travers (East Freetown, Mass.) threw out DeMedeiros at third and Campo got a strikeout for the final out of the inning, holding the Corsairs to only one run.

The first three batters for UMass-Dartmouth reached in the seventh. DeMedeiros came home on an RBI single by Newton, while Alberto Vasquez (Roxbury, Mass.) was brought in on an RBI ground-out by Ben Monteiro (Swansea, Mass.), giving UMD the four-run lead. Matt Russell (Townsend, Mass.) pitched a 1-2-3 seventh for the Corsairs to give UMD the win.

Bolz pitched six scoreless innings in the win. Medeiros, Agostini, and Newton each hit 2-for-4 in the game. Campo took the loss for RWU, allowing four runs (one earned) in six innings. Pascarella was 2-for-3 for the Hawks.

In the second game, both teams managed a base hit in their first at-bat but were unable to score the runner. UMass-Dartmouth had a good chance to put their first run on the board in the second, but good defense by RWU kept the Corsairs scoreless. Newton was hit in the first at-bat of the inning and made his way to third on a sacrifice and wild pitch. He tried to score on a grounder to first, but was taken down at home an on-point throw by Shawn Cariglio (Milford, Conn.) to the plate. Travers then threw out Medeiros trying to steal second to end the inning.

The Hawks were able to break through in the third, beginning with a lead-off single by Mike Thomas (Plainville, Conn.). After being sacrificed over by Jake Wazorko (Burlington, Conn.), he scored on a two-out RBI single by Caulin Rogers (Gloucester, Mass.) on a base hit up the middle, taking a short hop just under the glove of Farias.

RWU's lead would not last long, as UMass-Dartmouth took advantage of a pair of misplays in the infield in the fourth to plate two. Agostini tied the game on a sacrifice fly by Newton, while DeMedeiros scored the go-ahead run on an RBI ground-out by Farias. The following inning saw the Corsairs add two more runs to their lead on a two-RBI single to right by Agostini.

The Hawks' last big chance to get back in the game came in the fifth, when Thomas and Savage both reached base to lead off the inning. They were able to make it to third with two outs before a fly-out to right ended the rally. The Corsairs would hold on for the win.

Tucker Bouchard (Kingston, Mass.) allowed one run in relief in the win for UMD. Agostini and Shaw both went 2-for-3 with a run scored. Hawk starter Dan Julian (Stratford, Conn.) took the loss, giving up four runs (two earned) in six innings. Thomas was 2-for-3 with a run, while Rogers was 2-for-4 with an RBI.

On Saturday, Roger Williams (21-13) will host Salve Regina on Saturday, while UMass-Dartmouth (17-16) welcomes Eastern Connecticut State.
