Baseball taken down late by Babson

Box Score BABSON PARK, Mass. — Babson College rallied for a 7-4 triumph over the Roger Williams University Baseball team in non-conference action on Thursday afternoon at Govoni Field.

First-year Joe Barry (Stoneham, Mass.) drove in the go-ahead run with a single in the bottom of the seventh inning, and sophomore Brody Loughlin (Rockland, Mass.) tossed four innings of one-hit ball. With its eighth win in the last nine games, Babson moves to 9-6 overall, while Roger Williams, which has now dropped two straight games, falls to 14-6 on the year.

Junior Rob Caggiano (Medford, Mass.) went 3-for-4 with two stolen bases, and classmate Dillon Gonzalez (Bevlerly, Mass.) had two hits, two runs scored and three stolen bases for the Beavers, who swiped 10 bags on the day. Junior Sean MacPhee (Framingham, Mass.) and first-year Joseph Euele (Acton, Mass.) also chipped in with two hits apiece.

Sophomore Shawn Cariglio (Milford, Conn.) had a pair of hits and drove in two runs for the Hawks.

Roger Williams jumped out to a quick lead, plating three runs in the top of the first. Senior Mike Pascarella (Milford, Conn.) led off with a walk and later scored on a two-out single by junior Chris Travers (East Freetown, Mass.) for a 1-0 lead. After back-to-back walks, Cariglio plated a pair of runs with a single to left for a 3-0 advantage.

Gonzalez scored on a single by MacPhee in the bottom of the frame to get one run back, and Babson pulled even with a pair of runs in the third. Gonzalez, who led off the inning with a single and a stolen base, advanced to third on a single to right field by first-year Kevin Murphy (Pembroke, Mass.). He came around to cut the deficit in half as Murphy got caught in a rundown between first and second, and Murphy later came across in the same fashion after MacPhee got caught trying to steal second with one out.

After the teams traded runs in the sixth, the Green and White took the lead for good with a three-run seventh inning. MacPhee reached on an infield single and senior Brendan Collins (Abington, Mass.) walked with one out before the Hawks brought in sophomore Tyler Winter (Plainfield, Conn.) to relieve classmate Troy DeLeon (East Hampton, Conn.).

Barry greeted Winter with a single down the left field line to plate MacPhee for a 5-4 lead, and senior Sean Lanahan (Avon, Conn.) followed with a single through the right side to score Collins for a two-run edge. Barry was cut down at the plate on a groundball back to Winter, but Caggiano came through with a two-out RBI single to give the Beavers a three-run lead.

That proved to be more than enough for Loughlin (2-0), who retired the first seven batters he faced after coming on for sophomore Hunter Silva (Bourne, Mass.) in the top of the sixth inning. He worked around an error and a double in the eighth, and got a groundball double play to erase a leadoff walk in the ninth.

Silva went five innings, allowing four runs on four hits and six walks while striking out three for Babson.
DeLeon (1-1) took the loss, giving up two runs and three hits in 2/3 of an inning. The Hawks, who used six different pitchers on the day, allowed 12 hits and five walks while striking out 10.

Babson returns to action on Friday when it hosts Wheaton at 3 p.m. on Friday, while Roger Williams will take on Western New England in a doubleheader on Saturday starting at 12 p.m.
