Box Score 2 BRISTOL, R.I. -Â The Roger Williams University Baseball team added two more victories to their record in two close games against Western New England on Saturday. The Hawks won the first 2-0, and rallied late to win the second 4-3 in extra innings (9 innings).
In game one, the Hawks were the first to get on the board after in the bottom of the first inning on a
Chris Travers (East Freetown, Mass.) RBI single to center before an inning- ending ground out to second.
Roger Williams would score the final run of the game in the bottom of the fourth after
Mike Thomas (Plainville, Conn.) walked and
Reid Nelson (Wallingford, Conn.) laid down a sacrifice squeeze to move Thomas into scoring position.
Kevin Baker (Wilbraham, Mass.) would record the RBI for the Hawks on a single to right before the inning ended on a pop out to second.
Sean Boyle (Arlington, Mass.) was exceptional for the Hawks from the mound, allowing just 3three hits in the game, making it very difficult for Western New England to put runners in scoring position.
The Golden Bears looked like they may rally in the top of the sixth after Chris Casey (Milford, Mass.) walked and a Kevin Marciano (Pepperell, Mass.) single to left put Casey in scoring position. However, Boyle was able to get the next two batters, forcing a fly out to center and a strike out to end the inning.
Boyle would get the win for the Hawks, pitching 6.1 innings with three strikeouts and no earned runs.
Tyler Pogmore (Lebanon, Conn.) would get the save.
Rogers went 2-for-3 for the Hawks, scoring one run, while Travers and Baker each recorded one hit and one RBI to give Roger Williams their 2-0 win.
Mike Lospinuso (West Islip, N.Y.) was handed the loss, pitching six innings and allowing six hits and one earned run with no strikeouts.
Marciano went 1-for-2 for the Golden Bears. Scott Hubener (Mendon, Mass.) and Steve Buckley (Monroe, Conn.) recorded the only other two hits of the game for Western New England.
The Golden Bears would be the first to strike in the second game of this afternoon double header, scoring two runs in the top of the fourth. Buckley led off the inning with a walk and Jeff Shult (Wappingers Falls, N.Y.) would also reach base after a throwing error.
With two runners on base, Kyle Maglio (Glastonbury, Conn.) would record an RBI single to give WNE the 1-0 advantage. Marciano would also single to send home a run before the inning ended.
Western New England would score their final run of the game in the next inning after a pair of singles by Steve Ambrosino (Laurel Hollow, N.Y.) and Buckley put runners on base. Shult got the RBI double to right that put his team up 3-0 going into the bottom of the fifth.
The Hawks also scored in the fifth inning when
Shawn Cariglio (Milford, Conn.) and
Trevor Larson (Northbridge, Mass.) reached base on a double and single, respectively.
Mike Pascarella (Milford, Conn.) hit an RBI single to put the Hawks on the board and make the score 3-1.
RWU would rally in the bottom of the seventh to tie the score and send the game to extra innings after a lead- off double for Nelson and an RBI triple for Cariglio sparked the momentum. Larson would walk, prompting a pitching change for the Golden Bears, but an error in the infield on a Rogers hit scored the tying run for the Hawks.
Both teams were unable to capitalize on some good offense in the eighth inning, leaving runners stranded in scoring position.
The Hawks would come away with the nail- biting victory in the bottom of the ninth after Larson walked and Pascarella reached base when he was hit by a pitch.
Jamie Timothy (Cohasset, Mass.) was the hero when his single to center scored Larson to put the Hawks on top 4-3.
George Lund (West Hartford, Conn.) pitched six for the Hawks giving up seven hits and three runs, before Pogmore entered the game to get the win with just one hit and two strikeouts.
