Gordon stuns Baseball in first game of CCC Tournament

Box Score

BRISTOL, R.I. - Fifth-seeded Gordon College upset the second-seeded Roger Williams University Baseball team 15-4 in the first round of the Commonwealth Coast Conference Tournament on Friday.

After a quiet first inning for both teams, Gordon began to heat up from the late, scoring three runs in the top of the second. Alex Smith (Wethersfield, Conn.) led the charge for the Fighting Scots with a double to right center. An error in the field allowed the next batter, Travis Pullen (Las Vegas, Nev.) to reach second and send home Smith. Alex German (Brimfield, Ill.) reached on an infield single to first and a dropped strike out on the next better would load the bases. Eric Walker (Danvers, Mass.) and Jesse Amaya (South Gate, Calif.) both walked in runs for Gordon before the inning ended.

The Hawks had no answer in the bottom half of the inning, but Gordon continued their attack.

Mark Fitzgerald (Simi Valley, Calif.) and Pullen walked to put two on base for the Fighting Scots in the top of the third before A.J. Bashaw (Norton, Mass.) would relieve Dan Julian (Stratford, Conn.) in the circle. German singled again to load the bases and another single for Joe Olszak (Danvers, Mass.) would put two more on the board giving Gordon the 5-0 advantage. Another error in the field on the Hawks scored one more for the Fighting Scots and an RBI double by Alonzo Martinez (El Paso, Texas) put Gordon up 8-0 before a strikeout ended the inning.

The Hawks looked to rally in the bottom of the inning after Trevor Larson (Northbridge, Mass.) was hit by a pitch and Mike Pascarella (Milford, Conn.) singled to put two on base. Jamie Timothy (Cohasset, Mass.) also reached on an error to load the bases, but Gordon was able to get out of the inning on a double play.

Gordon added to their lead again in the top of the fifth when Walker doubled to center and Amaya singled to bring him home, putting them on top 9-0.

The Hawks would get themselves on the board in the bottom half of the inning when Kevin Baker (Wilbraham, Mass.) and Larson reached base and brought Caulin Rogers (Gloucester, Mass.) to the plate. His RBI single gave RWU its first run. Timothy followed Rogers with another single to give the Hawks their second and final run of the inning.

The Fighting Scots continued to be active at the plate, scoring two more runs in the top of the sixth on RBIs by German and Olszak.

The Hawks scored their final runs of the game in the bottom of the sixth on singles by Baker and Larson. Rogers would get the RBIs, bringing both home and making the score 11-4, Gordon College.

A pitching change for the Hawks that brought Eric Diffily (N. Reading, Mass.) to the mound proved effective as he allowed only one hit and ended the inning quickly. Gordon also changed pitchers in the bottom of the inning and forced the Hawks into three quick outs.

The Fighting Scots scored their final runs of the game in the top of the eighth on singles by Smith, Pullen, and Olszak. A double for Walker and another single for Amaya both brought in runs to put Gordon up 15-4, which would be the final score of the game.

Roger Williams had a promising offensive stint in the final inning of play with a lead of single for Rogers and another single for Travers, but a double play and ground out to the pitcher ended the game giving Gordon the win.

Wesley Arning (Murfreesboro, Tenn.) got the win for Gordon, pitching six full innings, allowing four earned runs and only one walk. Amaya went 3-for-4 from the plate, bringing in four RBIs. Walker recorded two hits and three RBIs in the game as well.

Julian takes the loss for the Hawks in 2.1 innings pitched, giving up three earned runs and four walks. He also struck out four of the 16 batters he faced. Rogers went 4-for-5 with three RBIs. Thomas and Baker each went 2-for-4.

Roger Williams (22-15) will host #6 Wentworth Institute of Technology, who lost 7-5 to top-seeded Endicott earlier in the day, tomorrow at 1:00 p.m. Gordon (19-15) will travel to Springfield to play #3 Western New England, who won 7-5 over #4 Salve Regina.
