Baseball advances with win over Gordon

Box Score WENHAM, Mass. — The Roger Williams University Baseball team issued payback for a first-round loss at the hands of the Fighting Scots, defeating Gordon Baseball 7-1 at J Tec White Field.
Hawks' ace George Lund (West Hartford, Conn.) remained undefeated on the year, only surrendering one run on five hits to keep the Scots' offense at bay. With the loss, Gordon was bounced from the Commonwealth Coast Conference tournament after going 1-2 over the weekend.
The Fighting Scots knew they would be in for a tough one after crushing the Hawks on Friday afternoon in Bristol, R.I., 15-4. Lund took the mound for the first time during the CCC tourney after earning First-Team All-CCC honors for sporting a .96 ERA in eight starts this spring. The sophomore looked like the real deal in the top of the first, striking out all three Scots' batters on fastballs.

Gordon starter Scot Hall (Weymouth, Mass.) looked sharp early on as well, getting out of the first inning unscathed thanks to a nifty double play turned by Alex Smith (Wethersfield, Conn.) and Eric Walker (Danvers, Mass.). However, after another unsuccessful inning at the plate for the Scots, Roger Williams began to find the holes in Gordon's defense.

Reid Nelson (Wallingford, Conn.) took advantage of the wind blowing across the outfield and stretched a bloop hit into a double to lead off the inning. Nelson scored two batters later when Cariglio hit a chopper up the middle that found its way into shallow centerfield. Roger Williams made it 2-0 on a sacrifice fly to right field by senior captain Trevor Larson (Northbridge, Mass.).

The Fighting Scots looked to get one back in the top of the third inning when Travis Pullen (Las Vegas, Nev.) reached base on a throwing error by Kevin Baker (Wilbraham, Mass.). Alex German (Brimfield, Ill.) placed down a perfect bunt down the third-base line and beat out the throw to put two runners on with no outs. Joe Olszak (Danvers, Mass.) also laid down a bunt to move both Scots into scoring position on the sacrifice.
However, an unlucky bounce off the bat of Smith found its way into the outstretched glove of Lund to keep the runners from scoring. Lund then got Jesse Amaya (South Gate, Calif.) to ground out to end the inning.

Roger Williams broke the game open in the bottom half of the frame due to some sloppy play in the field. Caulin Rogers (Gloucester, Mass.) reached on a poke single to right field to lead off. Rogers stole second base and then got to third on a ball that squeezed underneath Olszak's stance. Hall countered by forcing Jamie Timothy (Cohasset, Mass.) to pop up to Pullen in foul ground, but walked the next two batters to load the bases.
The walks came back to haunt the Scots as Mike Thomas (Plainville, Conn.) singled to right field to score two runs. Alonzo Martinez (El Paso, Texas) accidentially booted the ball in the outfield to allow both remaining runners to advance another base. Errors remained an issue for the Scots as Cariglio reached on an missed throw by Walker to score another two runs and open a 6-0 lead for the Hawks.

Eric Proulx (Charlton, Mass.) relieved Hall after the flurry of runs and immediately walked Baker to put runners on first and second. Baker's speed on a stolen base forced Olszak into a bad throw, which brought Cariglio all the way around from second base for a 7-0 advantage.
The Scots had an uphill battle the rest of the way, as Lund had only surrendered five earned runs in eight appearances coming into the game. The Hawks' starter held the Scots to only one hit through the sixth inning, until Gordon was able to put together a promising rally.
Mark Fitzgerald (Camarillo, Calif.) broke through with a gapper to right-center for an easy double. Walker then blooped a ball down the right-field line that kicked up chalk to escort Fitzgerald to third. Pullen reached on a fielder's choice to the deep part of the infield behind second base, allowing Fitzgerald to score easily from third and break the scoreless streak.

German continued the hit parade with a single over the head of the Hawks' second baseman, but shallow alignment of the outfield limited Pullen's advance to only second base. Lund struckout pinch-hitter Wes Arning (Murfreesboro, Tenn.) and got Smith to hit a towering flyout to right to end the threat.

Proulx pitched very well in relief for the Fighting Scots, pitching 5.2 innings and only give up two hits. All seven runs were credited to Hall in two and a third innings, but only four were earned. Proulx struckout six batters in relief.
Lund improved to 8-0 with the win and went the complete game only give up five hits.
Roger Williams moves onto to play Western New England at Endicott later in the day. Gordon is scheduled to play its final game of the season in a non-conference game against Williams on Tuesday.
