MIT knocks down Men’s Soccer

Box Score CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – The Roger Williams University Men's Soccer team was downed on the road to MIT as the Engineers defeated the Hawks 4-1 on Wednesday evening at Roberts Field at Steinbrenner Stadium.

MIT freshman Joshua Wilson (West Chester, Pa.) recorded a career-best two goals–one in each half. Wilson put the Engineers on the board first when he fired a shot from 10 yards outside the box that landed in the corner of the Hawks' goal at 21:07 before he capped the scoring with a penalty shot at 80:06.

MIT also received goals from junior Sean Bingham (Garden City, N.Y.) and sophomore Kareem Itani (Dallas, Texas). The Engineers outshot the Hawks, 15-5, and held an advantage in corners, three to two. Roger Williams' lone tally occurred off a free kick in the second half as freshman Charlie Mader (Scarborough, Maine) headed in a cross from senior Andre Brueckner (W. Simsbury, Conn.). Roger Williams's senior goalkeeper Tom Mangels (Garden City, N.Y.) turned away three shots, while MIT senior Sam Cannon (Scarsdale, N.Y.) registered a season-best three stops.

Wilson netted the game's first strike when he fired a shot from 10 yards outside the box on the far side that provided MIT with a 1-0 lead, which they took into the break. The Engineers extended its advantage with Itani's initial marker of the season from the far side at 58:35 before the Hawks trimmed the deficit with a goal by Mader, his first of the season.

Literally a minute after the Hawks' goal, the Engineers responded with Bingham, who deposited his sixth strike of the season off a cross from senior Nicholas Diamantoni (Boch Raton, Fla.) at 63:57. Wilson would net his final goal on a penalty kick after colliding with a Roger Williams defender in the box.

MIT improves to 2-0-2 all-time against Roger Williams, dating back to their initial meeting in 2011. This evening's win was the Engineers' first victory against the Hawks since claiming a 3-1 win in 2012.

Both teams return to action on Saturday, September 20 as MIT opens New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) play against Emerson College at 1:00 p.m., while Roger Williams welcomes Western New England for a 3:30 p.m. start.
