Double overtime penalty kick gives Men’s Soccer win

Box Score BRISTOL, R.I. – The Roger Williams University Men's Soccer team utilized a penalty kick to push past Western New England University Saturday afternoon, winning 1-0 in double overtime.

Western New England came out aggressive in the beginning of the game, outshooting the Hawks 8-0 in the first 14 minutes. The Golden Bears had a couple of chances in the early part of the contest to jump out to an early lead. In the second minute, Alan Haberern (Durham, Conn.) sent a shot on net that Hawk keeper Tom Mangels (Garden City, N.Y.) was just able to get a hand on. Five minutes later, Scott Trautwein (Pequannock, N.J.) found himself ahead of the Hawk defense in the box with just Mangels in front of him, but sent his chip shot over the net.

The Hawks were not without their chances as well. In the 13th minute, Charlie Mader (Scarborough, Maine) stepped up with a clear shot from the left side of the box, but just glanced it off the left post. Then in the 18th minute, James Sheldon (Amherst, N.H.) fired a head-on shot at Golden Bear goalie Kevin Strobel (Rockland, Mass.) but did not get enough on the shot, as Strobelm made an easy save.

Western New England's Ryan Dunnigan (Newtown, Conn.) made a crucial sliding step on a pass across the box by Dan Kelly (Stratford, Conn.) in the 35th minute. His play denied a good chance for the Hawks to put a shot on net.

In the second half, the Hawks began to assert themselves, getting more aggressive in the open field and getting more shot opportunities. In the period, RWU more than doubled its offensive output in the period, putting up 11 shots in the half compared to five in the first half. However, neither team would be able to find the back of the net by the end of regulation or the end of the first overtime period.

The game appeared to be headed for a scoreless tie until Sheldon was brought down in the box with 3:04 to play, setting up a penalty kick. Sheldon would step up and bury the shot into the right corner to send the Hawks home as winners in a hard-fought battle.

Mangels collected his fourth shutout of the season in the win, making eight saves in the game. Strobel had six saves for the Golden Bears in the loss.

Roger Williams (4-3-1, 1-1-0 CCC) will host Wheaton College on Wednesday, while Western New England (5-3-1, 1-1-0 CCC) heads to Wesleyan on the same day.
