#21 Wheaton edge Men’s Soccer on late goal

Box Score BRISTOL, R.I. – #21 Wheaton College remained undefeated with a 3-2 win over the Roger Williams University Men's Soccer team Wednesday evening in non-conference action.

The Lyons improve to 9-0-1 with the win, while Roger Williams falls to 4-4-1 on the season.

Both teams jumped out the gate fast and aggressive, closing out quickly to loose balls and marking hard on all players. The Hawks' persistence paid off early on, as RWU was able to capitalize and strike first. Dan Kelly (Stratford, Conn.) got a first touch on a ball to Trevor Sparda (Scarborough, Maine), who found Charlie Mader (Scarborough, Maine) for a shot into the left corner for a 1-0 Hawk lead.

Roger Williams' advantage would last until the 27th minute. Luke Finkelstein (Peabody, Mass.) sent a corner kick backwards to Liam Daniels (New York, N.Y.). Daniels booted the ball into the box, where Noah Kossoff (New York, N.Y.) knocked in the shot to tie the game at one apiece.

The Hawks wasted little time regaining the advantage. Tyler Peckham (Coventry, R.I.) came down less than a minute later and bounced a shot off of a Wheaton defender to find the back of the net and put RWU back on top 2-1.

RWU looked to go into the break with the lead, but Daniels was able to find Amara Sesay (Bronx, N.Y.) with just under five minutes to play in the half for the equalizer.

In the second half, the game continued to be hard fought on both sides of the ball, with close calls by the two squads. In the 67th minute, Sesay nearly knocked in a one-timer shot just inside the left corner off a long pass across the box. However, Tom Mangels (Garden City, N.Y.) stepped up with a great diving save to stop the potential score.

Then later in the period, Trevor Sparda (Scarborough, Maine) sent a free kick into the penalty area to a running Andrew Carlson (Ridgefield, Conn.), who just missed getting a good header on the ball by inches.

The turning point came in the 83rd minute, when Daniels set up a teammate for the third time of the evening. Matheus Goncalves (Framingham, Mass.) connected on his pass with a shot to the left corner for the game winner.

Lyon goalie David Sorkenn (River Edge, N.J.) escaped with his fourth win of the year, making four saves in the contest. Mangels had eight stops for RWU in the game.

Both teams will be in action on Saturday, as Roger Williams heads to Endicott, while Wheaton hosts WPI.
