Women’s Basketball hands Curry its first conference loss

Box Score MILTON, Mass. – The Roger Williams University Women's Basketball team topped Curry College, 54-44, in Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) action Thursday night in Milton. The Hawks improved to 9-5 on the season and 6-1 in CCC play, while the Colonels fell to 9-5 overall and 6-1 in conference action.

Roger Williams opened the first period on a 12-5 run that began after senior Lisa Lutz (Downers Grove, Ill.) made a jump shot,  and was later capped off by junior Rachel Battista (Johnston, R.I) with a made layup with 12:49 on the clock. Curry pushed back and cut the deficit to 16-12 with a three-pointer by freshman Brianna Hoffman at 9:45. But the Hawks went on to outscore the Colonels 17-7 over the next nine minutes and entered the break with a 14-point edge (33-19).

The Colonels started the second frame strongly, outscoring the Hawks 14-7 on a run that started with a made layup by junior Kerry White (Windham, N.H.). Roger Williams responded with a 14-9 run of its own, this time ending with a layup by junior Angelica Ariola (Prospect, Conn.). With only 12 seconds remaining in regulation, senior Samantha Corcoran made a jump shot, bringing the final score to 54-44 in favor of the Hawks.

Ariola led all scorers with 20 points. Freshman Teagan Dunn (Burlington, Conn.) followed behind with 10 points. Sophomore Katie Lowerre (Sharon, Mass.) had a team-best 11 rebounds, and classmate Bridget Quilty (Duxbury, Mass.) chipped in with six points and nine boards.

Curry was led by White with a game-high 12 rebounds and to go along with eight points. Corcoran also contributed eight points, four boards and five blocks. Junior Shannon Griffith (West Hartford, Conn.) recorded seven points and four rebounds.

Both teams return to CCC action on Saturday at 1:00 p.m. The Hawks visit the University of New England, while the Colonels travel to Salve Regina.
