Women’s Basketball paces Gordon in CCC win

Box Score BRISTOL, R.I. – The Roger Williams University Women's Basketball team extended its home winning streak to five games, upending Gordon College 55-46 Tuesday evening.

The win for Roger Williams improves the Hawks to 10-6 overall and 6-4 in the Commonwealth Coast Conference. Gordon drops its 13 straight conference, falling to 2-14 overall and 0-9 in the CCC.

Both teams struggled from the field early in the ballgame, as Gordon shot only 36.0 percent (9-for-25) in the first half. The Hawks did not fare any better, going 8-for-27 from the field for a 29.6 percent clip.

Roger Williams scored the first two baskets of the game before Gordon tied the game at four and later again at eight. RWU used an 8-2 run, six of which came from Rachel Battista (Johnston, R.I.) to go up by six (16-10). Mariah Nicholas (Acushnet, Mass.) later gave RWU its largest lead with a driving layup to put RWU up 19-12.

However, the Fighting Scots stormed right back, using a 12-4 run of their own to earn their first lead of the game. A jumper by Brooke Kratche (Chagrin Falls, Ohio) put Gordon up 24-23 with 5:18 to play in the half. Unfortunately for Gordon, that would be their final points of the period, as the Hawks closed out the half on a 7-0 run to take a six-point halftime lead.

Roger Williams kicked off the second period with a 10-4 run capped off by a three-pointer from Angelica Ariola (Prospect, Conn.) to take its largest lead of the game, a 40-28 advantage with 15:35 to play. Despite trailing by double digits, Gordon continued to remain within striking distance. The Fighting Scots brought the deficit back within single digits and managed to pull within three points (41-44) with 5:45 to play on a Mariel Barner (Colorado Springs, Colo.) fast-break layup.

After a Hawk timeout, Emma Klis (East Northport, N.Y.) drained back-to-back three-pointers, while Lisa Lutz (Downers Grove, Ill.) completed a three-point play to put RWU back up by 12 in just over two minutes.

Battista led RWU with 13 points off the bench, while Ariola finished with 11 points, five assists, three rebounds, and three steals. Bridget Qulity (Duxbury, Mass.) went for six points, three blocks, and four steals in the win.

Kratche led Gordon with 16 points to go along with three steals. Kristen Smith (Littleton, Mass.) added 13 points and a pair of steals, while Sophie Linnell (Richmond, Va.) had four points and nine boards.

Both teams are in action on Saturday, with Roger Williams welcoming Salve Regina and Gordon heading to Nichols.
