Men’s Soccer halts skid with win over UMass-Dartmouth

Box Score BRISTOL, R.I. - The Roger Williams University Men's Soccer team ended a five-game winless streak Tuesday evening with a 2-1 win over the University of Massachusetts-Dartmouth.

In the eighth minute, the Hawks missed a great opportunity to notch the first goal of the game. Trevor Sparda (Scarborough, Maine) launched a free kick from just outside the top of the box, bending it around the wall of Corsair defenders. It appeared headed for the goal, but somehow that ball bounced off of the right post. Cole Owens tracked the ball down and tried to put in the loose ball, but had his shot stopped by Corsair keeper Andre Reis (Fairhaven, Mass.).

Roger Williams came through in the 11th minute, when Dan Kelly (Miller Place, N.Y.) took advantage of a failed clear in the box. Kelly got possession of the ball and buried a shot into the left corner to put RWU up 1-0.

The Hawks added another score in the 21st minute to grab a 2-0 lead on UMass-Dartmouth. Sean Janson (Avon, Conn.) sent in a cross to Kelly, who headed a shot that Reis managed to stop. However, Owens this time managed to convert on his shot to make it a 2-0 game.

UMass-Dartmouth got one of the goals back on a penalty kick in the 26th minute. A Hawk defender was called for a push in the back as Stephan Teixeira (Brockton, Mass.) made his way inside the box. Teixeira scored on both of his penalty attempts, as the first was wiped off of the board after a player moved too early on the initial shot.

In the second half, the Corsairs kept the Hawk defense on its toes, outshooting the team 7-2 over the first 25 minutes of play. Teixeria came close to tying the game with a deep shot in the 69th minute, but a jumping one-handed save by Ryan Fowler (Maynard, Mass.) helped preserve the Hawk lead.

The Corsair offense continued to fight throughout the half but could not manage to come up with the game-tying goal. The Hawk defense swarmed on UMass-Dartmouth's forwards and managed to help RWU hold on for the win.

Nick Nelson (Madison, Conn.) made one save for RWU in the win before being relieved by Fowler and Carsten Frederickson (Bainbridge Island, Wash.), who each made one stop. Reis finished with six saves for the Corsairs.

Roger Williams (5-7-1) will host Curry College on Friday, while UMass-Dartmouth (6-5-1) plays Keene State on Saturday.
