Box Score BRISTOL, R.I. - The Roger Williams University Men's Soccer team dropped its final regular season home game to Gordon College, falling 2-0 Saturday afternoon.
Prior to the game, the Hawks recognized its two seniors,
Jesse DiPietro (Woodbridge, Conn.) and
James Sheldon (Amherst, N.H.) for their dedication to the program.
Gordon maintained strong ball control throughout the early part of the first half. The Fighting Scots nearly scored in the ninth minute off of a corner kick by Caleb Cole (Coatesville, Pa.). Cole booted a kick towards the back corner of the net towards Tyler Modzeleski (Cazenovia, N.Y.), whose shot missed scoring inside the right corner by inches. Luckily for RWU,
Nick Nelson (Madison, Conn.) managed to shield off the open spot in the corner and come away with the save.
The Hawks began to increase its possession time and get more offensive chances later in the first half, but were unable to convert. Gordon, conversely, managed to notch a pair of goals in the closing minutes of the first period.
Danny Nkhalamba (Concord, N.H.) scored on a put-back off of a shot off the post by Cole in the 38th minute. Cole's shot ricocheted off of the right post and bounced back towards the left side of the box, towards Nkhalamaba for the first goal of the contest.
Nkhalamba later assisted on Gordon's second score of the half, bringing the ball down the right sideline and sending it to Torrey Stricklin (Warwick, R.I.). Terjanian crossed the ball through the box to a wide open Aaron Terjanian (West Chester, Pa.) who tapped in a shot to the left corner with just under four minutes left in the half.
In the second period, both teams contested the ball strongly, not allowing many clean attempts on either side. Both teams combined for nine shots in the half after putting up 22 shots total in the first period.
Cole Owens had a good look in the 80th minute after receiving a long pass on the left side. He was able to bring in and get the shot off, but had it blocked by a Fighting Scot defender.
Josh Spoonhour (Greencastle, Pa.) made two saves for Gordon in the shutout, while Nelson made five stops for RWU.
Roger Williams (7-8-1, 3-5-0 CCC) ends the regular season Tuesday at the University of New England, while Gordon (12-3-0, 6-1-0 CCC) heads to Endicott on Tuesday as well.
