Men's Soccer stunned in 2OT in CCC Quarters

Box Score WENHAM, Mass.— The sixth-seed Roger Williams University Men's Soccer team had its opening round upset bid fall just short in double overtime, as the #3 seed Gordon College edged past RWU 2-1 in the second extra period.

Gordon Men's Soccer found some magic late when Josh Cochran (Bellville, Ohio) tipped in a loose ball with 25 seconds in regulation to force overtime before rookie Josh Beveridge (Anchorage, Alaska) sent the Scots into the semifinals with a strike in the 104th minute.

The Hawks end their season at 8-9-1 and 4-5 in the CCC. Gordon's improbable comeback has them sitting at 13-4 and 7-2 entering a rematch with No. 2 Western New England on Tuesday.

Gordon pressure the Hawks early with four corner kicks in the first two minutes of play, but Roger Williams' strong defensive unit headed the ball away from danger each time.

Roger Williams countered out of the Gordon pressure and took advantage of a mistake in the Scots defensive third. Trevor Sparda (Scarborough, Maine) showcased a strong throw in all game and he sent a long ball into the middle of the 18-yard box in the 14th minute. Sophomore captain Charlier Mader (Scarborough, Maine) got enough of a head on the throw to redirect it into the right corner of the goal for the early lead.

The Fighting Scots had eight corners to only two for the Hawks in the opening 45 minutes, but the could only must four shots and none on target.

Gordon looked to have its chance at tying the game in the 54th minute when Tyler Modzeleski (Cazenovia, N.Y.) got loose for a fast break on the right side. Nick Nelson (Madison, Conn.) approached Modzeleski and forced the freshman to push the ball just left of the goalpost. Caleb Cole (Coatesville, Pa.) and Ian Burkhart (Lancaster, Pa.) also had close calls, including Burkhart's strike in the 79th minute that was punched away by Nelson on a diving stop.

After a short injury timeout with just a few moments remaining, Gordon gave it one last push and came up with gold. A ball pinballed in between several Scots and Hawks in the 18-yard box, but Cochran was able to poke it into the twine for the equalizer with less than a minute left.

Nelson came up big for the Hawks in the first overtime period, saving a low drive by Cole. The ball sputtered back into the fray and Beveridge slid into it, but sent it over the crossbar.

In the second overtime, Gordon finally wore down the Hawks in the middle of the field. The Scots registered all three shots on goal in the period, the first two were stopped by Nelson. Cole ran onto a ball on the left side and sent a ball along the ground across the face of the goal. Beveridge made up for his earlier miss by lacing the pass into the back of the net to end the game in the 104th minute.

Nelson made five saves for the Hawks, all coming after the first half. Josh Spoonhour (Greencastle, Pa.) had three saves for Gordon.
