Last-second three downs Women's Basketball

Box Score NORTON, Mass. - Wheaton College women's basketball team opened the 2015-2016 season with a thrilling 65-64 victory over the Roger Williams University Women's Basketball team on Saturday afternoon inside Emerson Gymnasium in the Cheryl Warren-Powers '95 Memorial Game.

Senior Rebecca Arnone, who hit the game-winning three-pointer for the Lyons, led all players with a game-high 18 points on 7-18 shooting. Emily Cuthbertson ended the game with 13 points for Wheaton, while Kiley Shoemaker knocked down 10 points. Shoemaker's 10 points today moved her career total to 938.

Sophie Black led the Lyons defensively with eight rebounds, while Ruthie Zientek and Oppie Morris both collected five boards.

Bridget Quilty ended the afternoon with the games only double-double, knocking down 11 points on 4-7 shooting and pulling down 10 boards. Katie Lowerre paced the Hawks with a team-high 12 points after shooting 6-13 from the field. Teagan Dunn, Rachel Battista and Mariah Nicholas each ended the contest with 10 points for Roger Williams.

With the first quarter tied at 3-3, layups by both Dunn and Nicholas handed the Hawks an advantage that they would hold onto into the intermission.

Rebecca Olivieri drained a three-pointer at the 4:20 mark in the second quarter that cut the Lyon deficit to 22-21. Roger Williams responded with a 9-0 run over the next three minutes to jump ahead 31-21. The Hawks would go onto capture their largest lead of the contest with a little under a minute remaining in the half courtesy of a Lowerre jumper.

Wheaton slowly chipped away at the Roger Williams lead over the first five minutes of the third quarter, pulling within a point on a Shoemaker layup at the 5:35 mark. Zientek reclaimed the lead for the Lyons moments later with back-to-back free-throws.

After ending the third quarter with a 45-42 lead, the Lyons continued to push the pace, capturing their largest lead with 7:49 remaining in the game. The lead did not last long as the Hawks fought their way back in the game, tying the contest at 60-60 with 2:02 remaining. A made free-throw from Anna Walther and Nicholas extended the Roger Williams lead to two points with 46 seconds left to play. Arnone responded with a layup at 00:30, which was followed by a Roger Williams jumper with just nine seconds to go.

Now trailing 64-62 with just nine seconds remaining on the game clock, the Lyons got set with a timely timeout. Now inbounding from half court, Zientek inbounded the ball to Morris at the top of the arc, who quickly gave it back. Allowing the offense to get set, Zientek dished the ball out to Arnone who was perched on the left side of the three-point arc. The senior calmly pulled up, draining a monster three with just seconds left.

Roger Williams got the ball back with 00:03 remaining but were unable to counter.

Donations, concessions and admission from this weekend benefit the Little Angels of Warren-Powers Memorial Fund in supporting Cheryl's twins, Jordan and Craig. Warren-Powers, who passed away on May 22, 2012, was a standout athlete in basketball and softball at Bishop Feehan High School becoming the second female athlete to score 1,000 career points for the Shamrocks. She went on to play both sports at Wheaton and, upon graduating, continued to be an avid supporter of each program. As a coach, Cheryl impacted many including the student-athletes she was involved with on the Lyons' softball team and the girls' basketball program at Foxboro High School.

The Lyons return to the court on Wednesday, Nov. 18 at 7 p.m. when they host Newbury in Emerson Gymnasium.
