Women’s Basketball overpowers Gordon

Box Score WENHAM, Mass.— The Roger Williams University Women's Basketball handed a 68-53 loss to Gordon College Tuesday evening in a road Commonwealth Coast Conference matchup.

Junior guard Olivia Vetere (Mahopac, N.Y.) scored a game-high 26 points for Gordon College Women's Basketball team, but it wasn't enough to overcome a big second-half deficit.

The Hawks' starters scored 54 of the team's points as Roger Williams improved to 15-2 in the Commonwealth Coast Conference, keeping them within on game of top-seeded UNE entering the final weekend of the regular season.

Roger Williams scored in every facet of the game over the first few minutes and capped off a 12-4 run on a three by Angelica Ariola (Prospect, Conn.). Vetere and Sophie Linnell (Richmond, Va.) combined for all of Gordon's next nine points, allowing the Fighting Scots to close to gap to five just a three minutes later.

Once again the Hawks made a run on the back of Ariola's long ball. The junior came into the contest just 23 points away from scoring her 1,000th in three seasons and had 11 points by the half. The Hawks grew the lead to as many as 16 in the late stages of the half, but a Brooke Kratche (Chagrin Falls, Ohio) fastbreak layup in the final minute cut it to 14 at the break, 34-20.

The Hawks more than doubled their halftime lead in the first eight minutes of the second period, holding Gordon to only four points during that span. Every Roger Williams starter scored during the 19-4 run to begin the half and put Gordon in a deep hole.

It was Vetere who allowed Gordon to slowly climb their way back into the game, making a career-high six shots from deep. Despite the Hawks big run the start the second half, Gordon outscored them by 15 points over the final 10 minutes of play to bring some momentum into the final game of a tough season.

Ariola only scored four points in the second half after a hot start, finishing eight points shy of the career benchmark. Sophomore forward Bridget Quilty (Duxbury, Mass.) equaled Ariola's scoring output with 15 points, while also contributing nine rebounds and four assists—both team highs. Sophomore Emma Klis (East Nortport, N.Y.) also chipped in 11 points and team-high three steals.

The Hawks shot 47.2-percent from the field and made nearly half of their attempts from behind the arc. Roger Williams also outrebounded Gordon by three, 32-29.

Following Vetere's 26 points, Kratche celebrated her Senior Night with an 11-point, seven-rebound performance on her home court. Kratche also picked up three steals to pace Gordon's defensive effort. Kristen Smith (Littleton, Mass.) had 10 points and seven boards as well. Freshman Jenna Olson (Rutland, Vt.) gave the Scots good energy off the bench with five rebounds, an assist and a steal.

Roger Williams ends its season at home on Saturday against the University of New England. Gordon goes on the road to play Eastern Nazarene at 1 p.m.
