Box Score 2 LAKELAND, FLA. – The Roger Williams University Baseball team picked up their first win of the season by splitting a double header with Worcester Polytechnic Institute. The Hawks are now 1-5 overall and WPI is 3-1 on the season.
RWU put the first runs on the board in the bottom of the first.
Kevin Baker (Wilbraham, Mass.) opened the inning with a double and then scored when
Jimmy Smith (Walpole, Mass.) doubled right behind him.
Caulin Rogers (Gloucester, Mass.) earned a base on balls to put runners on first and second.
Jamie Timothy (Cohasset, Mass.) advanced the runner with a sacrifice bunt.
Shawn Cariglio (Milford, Conn.) grounded out but scored Smith and advanced Rogers to third base. A double by
Chris Travers (East Freetown, Mass.) picked Rogers up to put the score at 3-0.
WPI (3-1) responded with four of its five runs in the top of the second to take the lead. With the bases juiced and zero outs, Matt Cote (Burrillville, R.I.) doubled in a pair of Engineers. Vinny D'Ambrosio (Mahopac, N.Y.) and Nick Comei (Haverhill, Mass.) each followed with an RBI single.
Anthony Capuano (Stoneham, MA) pushed home Sean Greene (Hingham, MA) with what proved to be a game-winning RBI ground out. Roger Williams scored an unearned run in the seventh but the Engineers prevailed with the 5-4 victory.
Andrew Portera (Alpharetta, Ga.) picked up the win and Dan Bettigole (South Windsor, Conn.) struck out three in the final 2 2/3 en route to the save and
A.J. Bashaw (Norton, Mass.) picked up the loss for the Hawks.
DJ Ouellette (Watertown, CT) scored the first run of the second game when he was awarded home courtesy of a balk in the bottom of the second.
RWU used RBI singles in the top of the third to even it up. Roger singled down the right field line and stole second and third to get into scoring position. Travers picked him up puch one through the left side.
The Engineers regained the lead in the bottom of the fifth thanks to Venditti's 2-RBI double to center field.
The Hawks swung the pendulum in its favor with a four-run top of the sixth. Rogers walked and advanced to third on a throwing error on a failed pick-off attempt. Timothy reached on an error that scored Rogers. Cariglio singled then advanced to second on a wild pitch that scored Timothy.
Bryan Terzian (Westport, Conn.) walked and advanced to second on a balk that pushed Cariglio to third.
Adam Dellemonico (Burlington, Mass.) singled up the middle to score the two runners and put the Hawks up 6-3.
WPI battled back in the home half of the sixth to tie the game once again. D'Ambrosio singled in a run and Greene knotted the contest at 6-6 with a 2-RBI single to left center.
An unearned run in the top of the seventh proved to be the difference for the Hawks. Cariglio singled to left to score Rogers who reached on an error.
Tyler Winter (Plainfield, Conn.) earned the Hawks first win of the season and
Brendan Telfer (Avon, Conn.) picked up a save.
The Hawks return to action Friday, March 13 at 9:00 a.m. to take on Southern Maine on Myrtle Park Field #2 in Auburndale, Fla.
