Baseball Drops Doubleheader with Wentworth

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 NORTHBORO, MASS. - The Roger Williams University Baseball team drops doubleheader to Wentworth Institute of Technology 7-5 and 1-0.  The Leopards improve to 9-3 overall and 2-0 in the Commonwealth Coast Conference while the Hawks drop to 2-11 and 0-2 in the CCC.

Game 1 ( RWU 5 - WIT 7 )

The Leopards took the early lead in the top of the second capitalizing on a Johnny Ryan (Brant Rock, Mass.) double with one out.   Jimmy Temte (Northborough, Mass.) followed Ryan with home run that gave the visitors a two run lead.

RWU answered in the bottom of the second with a three run inning that brought eight batters to the box.  Chris Travers (East Freetown, Mass.) started the rally arriving safely to first on a Wentworth error. Kevin Baker (Wilbraham, Mass.) advanced Travers to scoring position with a one out single.  Jimmy Goober (Burlington, Mass.) put a two out single into play to load the bases for Matt Moskal (Hamden, Conn.) who singled to drive in two runs.   Jamie Timothy  (Cohasset, Mass.) singled to score Goober who had advanced to scoring position on Moskal single earlier.

The Hawks would hold a one run lead until the top of the fifth inning when the Leopards tied it up by scoring Joe Hulme (Tewksbury, Mass.).  Hulme drew a walk to open the inning and was advanced to scoring position on a fielder choice.  A two out double by Tyler Weninger (Chandler, Ariz.) picked Hulme to knot the contest at three all.

RWU strike back in the bottom of the inning to retake the lead with a two out rally initiated with a Goober single.   Moskal and Timothy would draw walks that loaded the bases and Caulin Rogers (Gloucester, Mass.) singled in two more runs to put the contest at 5-3.

Wentworth answered in the top of the sixth with their most productive inning.  Ryan opened the inning with a walk and advanced to scoring position on a Temte single.  Anthony Matera (Trumbull, Conn.) bunted behind the runners to put them at second and third.  Christian Ferri (Bloomfield, N.J.) was then hit by a pitch to load the bases with one out.  Hulme responded with a double that picked up Ryan and Matera and even the scoreboard at five each.  Jake Mailman (Medway, Mass.) drew an intentional walk to reload the bases and give the Hawks an opportunity to end the inning on a double play but  Jordan Burst (Jackson, N.J.) had other plans and drove in two more runs with a single that proved to be the game winner.

The Hawks advanced runners to second base in both the sixth and seventh but were unable to bring home them home.

Game 2  ( RWU 0 - WIT 1 )

The Leopards scored the only run of the game in the top of the sixth on a Temte home run.  Robby Sheldon (Dover, N.H.) came away with the win on six innings of work while Tyler Campo (Wrentham, Mass.) picked up the loss in the pitching duel.  Zack Bernier (North Dartmouth, Mass.) earned a save  striking out one batter in one inning.
