Box Score 2 WINTER HAVEN, Fla. – The Roger Williams University dropped a pair of one-run contests to Coe College Sunday afternoon, falling 4-5 in the opener and 6-7 in the second game.
In the opener, neither team managed to score over the first three innings. The Hawks broke through first in the fourth inning, with
Shawn Cariglio (Milford, Conn.) scoring
Chris Travers (East Freetown, Mass.) with an RBI double.
RWU's lead lasted until the fifth inning, when Coe managed to go on top. The Kohawks took advantage of two Hawk errors to score five runs in the frame to take a four-run lead. Roger Williams managed to get two of the runs back in the sixth inning off of a two-run homerun by
Reid Nelson (Wallingford, Conn.).
Roger Williams made one last rally in the top of the seventh, with
Kevin Baker (Wilbraham, Mass.) coming in with two outs on a botched double play to pull within one. However, RWU couldn't get the tying run in, with Coe holding on for the win.
Troy DeLeon (East Hampton, Conn.) allowed five unearned runs in six innings in the loss. Nelson was 1-for-3 with a run and two RBI, while Cariglio was 1-for-3 with an RBI.
In the second game, the Hawks stormed out to a five run lead in the bottom of the first. Three wild pitches in the game led to three runs in the inning for RWU, while Nelson added an RBI double and later scored on an error at short.
RWU's advantage held until the fourth, when Coe brought in four runs to pull within one. The Hawks added a run in the bottom of the fourth on an RBI single by Nelson to bring the lead back to two.
Coe managed to pull back within one in the sixth inning, and finally took the lead in the top of the seventh with a two runs to take a 7-6 lead. In the bottom of the inning, RWU managed to get the tying run within scoring position but left him stranded at second to end the game.
Brenan Telfer (Avon, Conn.) took the loss, allowing two runs in the seventh. Starter
Eric Proulx (Charlton, Mass.) lasted 5.2 innings, allowing five runs.
Shane Nowak (Litchfield, N.H.) went 2-for-4 with a run scored, while
Caulin Rogers (Gloucester, Mass.) was 1-for-3 with a run and an RBI.
Roger Williams (0-4) will face WPI tomorrow in a doubleheader.
