Baseball falls in season opening doubleheader

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 LAKELAND, Fla. – The Roger Williams University Baseball team fell in its first contests of 2015, losing 1-5 and 3-4 to Wartburg College in the team's first doubleheader of the season.

In the opener, Wartburg jumped out to a quick 4-0 lead. The Knights were aided by a pair of errors by Roger Williams in the inning, as well as a two-run homerun by Ryan Kemp. Wartburg later grabbed one more run in the top of the fourth inning on an RBI double by DJ Utley.

The Hawk offense was shut down for most of the game. Wartburg starter Michael Knouse took a perfect game into the bottom of the fifth and had a no-hitter until the bottom of the sixth, with Caulin Rogers (Gloucester, Mass.) picking up RWU's first hit of the game.

The Hawks finally managed to get on the board in the bottom of the seventh, with Shawn Cariglio (Milford, Conn.) bringing home Reid Nelson (Wallingford, Conn.) with an RBI. Yet that would be all RWU could muster, as the Knights came away with the win.

George Lund (West Hartford, Conn.) suffered the loss, allowing all five runs (four earned) in six innings of work. Rogers, Nelson, and Cariglio each finished 1-for-3 at the plate, with Nelson adding a run scored.

In the second game, Shane Nowak (Litchfield, N.H.) scored in the top of the first on a wild pitch for a quick 1-0 RWU lead. However, the Knights responded in the bottom of the first on Milton Croes' RBI single.

Roger Williams would regain the lead in the following inning. Kevin Baker (Wilbraham, Mass.) brought home Joe Hock (Braintree, Mass.) with an RBI hit. The Hawks would later go up 3-1 in the fourth, with Baker scoring Nelson with another RBI single.

RWU's lead would not last long, as Wartburg tied the game in the bottom of the frame on RBI singles by Blake Wilson and Zach Hovick. In the fifth, Clay Henning knocked an RBI single that would ultimately serve as the game-winning hit.

Tyler Campo (Wrentham, Mass.) took the loss, giving up four runs (one earned) in five innings. Jamie Timothy (Cohasset, Mass.) was 2-for-4 in the game, while Baker finished 2-for-3 with a pair of RBIs.

Roger Williams (0-2) takes on Coe College on Sunday.
