Baseball Beats The Beacon 6-1

Box Score BRISTOL, R.I. – The Roger Williams Baseball team beat UMass-Boston Beacons 6-1. The Hawks improve to 8-16 on the season while the Beacons overall record drops to 10-11.

The Beacons scored first in the top of the third. Josh Lopez (New Haven, Conn.) started the rally with a single to arrive safely at first. Lopez stole second and advanced to third on a throwing error. Daniel Mantoni (Northbridge, Mass.) reached first on an error and scored Lopez to bring the score to 1-0.

The Hawks battled back in the bottom of the third. Matt Moskal (Hamden, Conn.) singled down the left field line. Kevin Baker (Wilbraham, Mass.) singled to right to put runners on first and second. Reid Nelson (Wallingford, Conn.) reached on a fielder's choice forcing Baker at second leaving runners at the corners. Shawn Cariglio (Millford, Conn.) singled to right to knock in Moskal to tie the game at 1-1.

Sam Bennett (Andover, Mass.) took the mound for the Roger Williams in the top of the fifth.

In the bottom of the fifth, the Hawks took the lead. Moskal singled to center. Nelson reached first on an error to put Moskal in scoring position. Cariglio reached first on a fielder's choice, and Moskal was out at third. Bryan Terzian (Westport, Conn.) slammed an RBI double to left field to scoring Nelson and Cariglio to put the Hawks ahead at 3-1.

The Beacons made a pitching change in the sixth, putting Joseph Dewey (Pittsfield, Mass.) on the mound.

Bennett tossed 3 2/3 innings of one-hit scoreless ball striking out 6. Bennett gave way to Tyler Winters who retired the pinch hitter he faced with a ground ball to second base.

The Hawks increased their lead in the bottom of the eighth. Zach Tavano (Londonberry, Conn.) started lead off with a walk. Caulin Rogers (Gloucester, Mass.) singled to right field to right field to put runners on first and second. Moskal walked to load the bases. In the middle of the inning, Alex Carusotto (Pittsfield, Mass.) came on to face Baker. Baker drew a walk that scored Tavano to put the score 4-1. Nelson reached on an error by the third baseman scoring Rogers. Jamie Timothy (Cohasset, Mass.) was hit by a pitch to advance all runners bringing the Hawks up 6-1. Harlan Zeerip (Bridgewater, Conn.) took the mound for the Beacons to end the inning.

Brendan Telfer struck out two in the 9th to close it out for the Hawks.

Jimmy Hamilton picked up the win for the Hawks and Sal Frosceno (Derby, Conn.) left with the loss.

The Hawks will face off against Western New England on April 4th at 2:00 PM. The Beacons will take on Keene State College in a double header in Keene, N.H. on April 18th at 12:00 PM.
