Baseball Holds off Brandeis

Box Score BRISTOL, R.I. – The Roger Williams University Baseball team holds off the Judges of Brandeis University 6-5. The Hawks improve to 9-16 overall while Brandeis slides to 11-16.

A.J. Bashaw (Norton, Mass. ) took the hill for the Hawks and Sean O'Neill opened for Brandeis.

The Hawks scored two runs in the bottom of the first inning. Sean Gaffney (Simsbury, Conn.) led off with an infield single using his speed to beat the throw. Gaffney then himself in scoring position by stealing second. Kevin Baker (Wilbraham, Mass.) hit a line drive to right for an RBI single and advanced to second on the throw to the plate. Shawn Cariglio (Milford, Conn.) singled to right to pick up Baker and give the Hawks a 2-0 lead.

Anthony Nomakeo relieved O'Neil in the third and worked for two and a third innings.

The Judges got one run back in the fifth. O'Connor singled to left field. Falkson doubled down the left field line to put runners at second and third. Healy singled up the middle to drive home O'Connor and cut the lead to 2-1.

Jimmy Hamilton (Schenectady, N.Y.) took the hill in the top of the sixth and the Judges followed suit bringing in Freeman.

The Hawks added a run in the sixth. Reid Nelson (Wallingford, Conn.) drew a walk. Bryan Terzian (Westport, Conn.) singled to center field to put the runners on first and second. Chris Travers (East Freetown, Mass.) singled through the right side and scored Nelson to bring the game to 3-1.

Sam Miller was brought in to relieve Miller to close out the inning for Brandeis.

The Hawks continued to produce in the seventh. Gaffney tripped to deep right center. Matt Moskal (Hamden, Conn.) hit a sacrifice fly to center field that scored a tagging Gaffney to make it 4-1 for the Hawks.

Tyler Winters (Plainfield, Conn.) entered the game in the top of the 8^th to pitch for the Hawks.

The Judges erased the lead in the top of the eighth. Heineman singled up the middle. Brenner hit an RBI double to score Heineman. Tettemer slammed a two run home run to tie the game up 4-4.

Nick Kennedy (Sandwich, Mass.) took the mound to break the momentum and recorded a fly out to stop the bleeding.

The Hawks answered the challenge in the bottom of the eighth. Caulin Rogers (Gloucester, Mass.) opened the inning with a walk. Terzian laid down a sacrifice bunt to put Rodgers in scoring position. Travers hit a bullet for a two-run home run to put the Hawks back on top 6-4.

Brandon Telfer (Avon, Conn.) entered in the top of the ninth for the Hawks.

The Judges stay determined in their final at bat. With two outs on the board Heineman worked a walk. Hart was brought in to pinch run for Heineman. Tettemer singled through the right side for an RBI that scored Hart and cut the lead to one run. With the bases loaded Zeccola drove a ball to right center that forced a diving catch by Rodgers to secure the win for the Hawks at 6-5.

Kennedy picked up the win for the Hawks, Miller took the loss for the Judges and Telfer earned the save.

The Hawks return to Commonwealth Coast Conference action on Saturday, April 18 at 12:00 p.m. to take on Eastern Nazarene in a doubleheader. Brandeis will play at Gordon on Tuesday, April 21 at 3:30 p.m.
