Baseball Sweeps East Nazarene

BRISTOL, R.I. The Roger Williams Baseball team kept their postseason hopes alive with a sweep of Eastern Nazarene.  The Hawks improve to 11-16 overall and 6-6 in the Commonwealth Coast Conference and the Lions drop 10-18 and 0-10 in the CCC .

Game 1 – RWU (11) – ENC (3)

Junior, Tyler Campo (Wrentham, Mass.), took the mound to start the game for the Hawks and  Frank Fusco (Yorktown Heights, N.Y.) got the nod for Lions. 

The Hawks took the early lead in the bottom of the first inning.  Jamie Timothy (Cohasset, Mass.) and Kevin Baker (Wilbraham, Mass.) drew walks to put runners on first and second.  Timothy and Baker successfully executed a double steal to put runners onsecond and third.  Reid Nelson (Wallingford, Conn.) hit a sacrifice fly to right field that allowed Timothy to tag up and score and advance and Baker to third to put the Hawks up 1-0.  Bryan Terzian (Westport, Conn.) reached on an error allowing Baker to increase the lead to 2-0.

In the top of the second Eastern Nazarene cut the lead back to a single run.   Brandon Wynne (New Haven, Conn.) walked then advanced to second on a wild pitch.  Eric Shea (Rossmoor, Calif.) then walked to put runners at first and second. Jake Koch (Dayton, Nev.) sacrificed Wynne and Shea to second and third.  Justin Wagner (Oklahoma City, Okla.) grounded to second to score Wynne.

In the top of the third inning Fiorentino worked a walk that was followed by a Pat Yee (Lynnfield, Mass.) single through the left side that moved Fiorentino to scoring position. Rocco Martinelli (Panama City, Panama) then grounded out to third, but advanced both runners giving the Lions runners at second and third.  Wynne then hit a single up the middle scoring both runners for two RBI's to give Lions a 3-2 lead.

The Hawks blew the game wide open in the bottom of the fifth. Baker led off with a double to center.  Nelson bunted down the third base line for a single and advanced Baker to third base. Shawn Cariglio (Milford, Conn.) worked a walk to load the bases. 

Eastern Nazarene brought in Doug English (Myrtle Beach, S.C.) to face Chris Travers (East Freetown, Mass.) who walked to score Baker.  Matt Moskal (Hamden, Conn.) then hit a single to right center that scored Nelson from third and Cariglio from second for two more runs. Caulin Rogers (Gloucester, Mass.) reached on error by the second basemen that scored Travers and moved Moskal to second.  Sean Gaffney (Simsbury, Conn.) then hit into a fielder's choice that forced the runner at second but scored Travers from third.  Gaffney stole second base and Timothy walked to load the bases a second time in the inning.  Baker walked forcing home Moskal from third and keeping the bases loaded. 

Eastern Nazarene went to Rob Dukes (Spencer, Mass.) from the bull pen for their second pitching change in the inning. 

Nelson hit a base clearing double to center that added three more runs.  Terzian then hit a single to left field scoring Nelson from second base putting the game out of reach at 11-3. 

Campo put in six innings of work before giving way to Nick Kennedy (Sandwich, Mass.) to close.

Campo earned the win the for the Hawks while Fusco picked up the loss going 5.1 innings.

Game 2 – RWU (3) – ENC (0)

Jimmy Smith (Walpole, Mass.) got the nod for the Hawks and Brent Houle (Westfield, Mass.) took the Hill for ENC . 

The Hawks took the lead in the bottom of the second with a solo home run by Terzian.

RWU added to their lead in the bottom of the fifth.  Travers singled to right center and scored the Hawks second run on a Rogers double to centerfield. Rogers advanced to third base on the throw to the plate.  Timothy hit a ground rule double that brought Rogers home for the final run of the game.

Smith picked up the win going seven innings for RWU and recorded his first shutout. Houle went six innings for the Lions in the loss.

The Hawks travel to Dudley, Mass. to tangle with the Bison at 12:00 p.m. tomorrow and the Lions return to the diamond in Quincy, Mass. on April 21 at 4:00 p.m. to host Lesley.
