Baseball Drops Non-Conference Game to UMass-Dartmouth

BRISTOL, R.I. – The Roger Williams University Baseball dropped a non-conference match up to the Corsairs of UMass-Dartmouth 4-2.  UMD improves to 17-11 and the Hawks slide to 14-17 on the season.
 
George Lund (West Hartford, Conn.) started on the mound for the Hawks and David Tarr (Easton, Mass.) opened for the Corsairs.
 
The Hawks took the early 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first.  Jamie Timothy (Cohasset, Mass.) was hit by a pitch.  Kevin Baker (Wilbraham, Mass.) grounded out to second to advance Timothy.  Reid Nelson (Wallingford, Conn.) doubled to center scoring Timothy.
 
The Corsairs tied the game at 1-1 in the top of the third.  Ervin Kantardzic (Roslindale, Mass.) reached on error and steal stole second while Andy Gonzalez (Mattapan, Mass.) was at the plate.  Gonzalez singled to advance Kantardzic to third and put runners at the corners. Josh O'Neill (Halifax, Mass.) grounded out to third scoring Kantardzic to tie the game at one a piece.
 
In the top of the fourth Jimmy Smith (Walpole, Mass.) relieved Lund for the Hawks.
 
UMD added to their lead in the top of the fourth.  Cory DeMedeiros (Fall River, Mass.) led off with a single to left field and stole second to get in scoring position. Taylor Cacciola (West Greenwich, R.I.) reached on an error that scored DeMedeirosto and put the game at 2-1.  Ben Monteiro (Swansea, Mass.) singled through the right side and Cacciola advanced to third.  Connor Shaw (Goffstown, N.H.) reached on error that scored Cacciola gave the Corsairs a 3-1 lead.
 
The game remained 3-1 until the bottom of the seventh.  Chris Travers (East Freetown, Mass.) led off with a double to left field.  Matt Moskal (Hamden, Conn.) grounded to second base to advance Travers to third. Caulin Rogers (Gloucester, Mass.) grounded out to the short stop to score Travers and cut the lead to 3-2.
 
UMD would add an insurance run in the top of the eighth.  George Agostini (Rehoboth, Mass.) led off with a double down the left field line.  Monteiro reached on an error that scored Agostini and brought to contest to its final score of 4-2 for the Corsairs.
 
Tarr earned the win going seven innings for UMD and Sean Callahan (Colchester, Vt.) picked up the save for his two innings of work.  Smith takes the loss for the Hawks in five innings while allowing only four hits.
 
The Hawks return to Commonwealth Coast Conference play on Saturday, April 25 for an 11:00 a.m. double header with Endicott College.  The Corsairs will also play two on Saturday 12:00pm at Eastern Conn. State.
