Baseball Splits with Endicott

BRISTOL, R.I. - The Roger Williams University Baseball team split their final Commonwealth Coast Conference regular season doubleheader with the Gulls of Endicott College 0-3 and 5-0.  The Hawks sit at 15-18 overall on the year and 9-7 in the CCC.  Endicott stands at 21-13 overall and 12-4 in the CCC
 
Game 1 – RWU (0) EC (3)
 
Tyler Campo (Wrentham, Mass.) took the hill to start the game for the Hawks and JJ Branch (Milford, Mass.) got the nod the Gulls.

Endicott put the first run on the board in the top of the first.  Michael DeDonato (Chelmsford, Mass.) worked a lead-off walk.  DeDonato stole second and advanced to third on a passed ball. Matthew Paola (Middlebury, Conn.) singled through the right side scoring DeDonato to make it 1-0.

The Gulls added to their lead in the top of the fifth. Cam Farnham (Andover, Mass.) singled to the left side. Brady Hall (Rockville, Md.) laid down a sacrifice bunt advance Farnham to second. Dan Zabbo (Dracut, Mass.) beat the pitcher to the bag on a single to the first baseman and Farnham advanced to third. DeDonato reached on a fielder's choice that forced Zabbo at second but scored Farnham.

Endicott scored their final run in the top of the sixth. Anthony (Portsmouth, R.I.) tripled to right field. Nick Berno (St. Albans, Vt.) pinch ran for Serina. Josh Drew (Intervale, N.H.) drove a sacrifice fly to center that scored Berno and put the contest at 3-0.

Branch went the distance for the Gulls giving up five hits and recording five strikeouts in the win.  Campo also gave up five hits and recorded five strikeouts in the loss.
Game 2  - RWU (5)  EC (0)

Troy DeLeon (East Hampton, Conn.) got the start for the Hawks and Owen Bautze (Sudbury, Mass.) took the ball for the Gulls.

Hawks struck first with a run in the bottom of the fourth. With two outs on the board Reid Nelson (Wallingford, Conn.) worked a walk. Chris Travers (East Freetown, Mass.) singled through the left side to advance Nelson to second.  Shawn Cariglio (Milford, Conn.) singled to right center to score Nelson and put the Hawks up 1-0.  Endicott replaced Bautze with Nick Quattro (Canton, Conn.) who get them out of the inning.

The Hawks scored two more in the bottom of the fifth to build a three run cushion. Matt Moskal (Hamden, Conn.) led off with a double to center.  Moskal Advanced to third on a balk.  Jamie Timothy (Cohasset, Mass.) doubled down the right field line to score Moskal.  Jimmy Smith (Walpole, Mass.) grounded out to second advancing Timothy to third.  Kevin Baker (Wilbraham, Mass.) singled up the middle to score Timothy and put the game at 3-0 for the Hawks.

Eric Nagle (Manchester, Conn.) came in for Quattro in the bottom of the sixth but the Hawks would continue to produce. Travers led off with a walk.  Zach Tavano (Londonberry, N.H.) advanced Travers to second.  Bryan Terzian (Westport, Conn.) doubled to right scoring Travers and bringing the score to 4-0. Sean Gaffney (Simsbury, Conn.) went in to pinch run for Terzian and Nagle gave way to Zac Poland (Essex Junction, Vt.) for the Gulls. Timothy singled through the right side to score Gaffney and bring the game to it eventual score of 5-0.

DeLeon went the distance to earn the shut-out and the win. He faced 22 batters giving up only one hit on his way to ten strikeouts.  Bautze went 3.2 in the loss for the gulls.

RWU and Endicott await the CCC Championship Tournament Bracket.  CCC Tournament double elimination action will begin Thursday, April 30 and conclude on May 2.
