Baseball opens up CCC Tournament with a win over Western New England

Box Score SPRINGFIELD, Mass. — Despite a late game comeback, Western New England 6-5 to the Roger Williams University Baseball team in the first round of the Commonwealth Coast Conference tournament on Pat Ricci Field at Trelease Park on Thursday.

Junior Eduardo Colmenares went 3-for-3 with two runs scored and his classmate Kevin Marciano added two hits and an RBI. Daniel Morin picked up two hits and crossed the plate twice.

Golden Bears' starter David Cherry pitched eight innings—fanning seven Hawks, while surrendering four earned runs. He battled throughout the entire contest, scattering 10 hits, but constantly worked his way out of jams.

Roger Williams' starter Troy DeLeon led the CCC in ERA—posting 1.28 mark, while Cherry ranked fourth in the conference at 1.84. Both pitchers were also in the top five in strikeouts: DeLeon with 50 and Cherry 44.

DeLeon worked 4-2/3 innings, and held the Golden Bears to three runs; he struck out seven batters.

The Hawks got on the board first in an unorthodox fashion in the first inning. Jamie Timothy walked and was advanced to second, when Kevin Baker followed with a single. A sacrifice hit advanced both runners, and then Cherry struck out Reid Nelson looking. Bryan Terzian, then, struck out swinging on a wild pitch, which scored Timothy—giving the Hawks a 1-0 lead.

The Golden Bears didn't let their deficit stand for long—putting a one spot on the board in the second inning. Colmenares led the inning off with a single and advanced to second on a grounder to third. Two batters later, Marciano delivered a single to right field, scoring Colmenares and knotting the game up at one apiece.

Cherry walked Baker to start the third inning, and he scored on a deep double to left field by Nelson. Again, in the fourth inning, Roger Williams pushed across another run, when Timothy singled to left field—advancing the Hawks lead to 3-1.

In the bottom of the fourth, Marciano picked up his second hit on a bunt single, but the Golden Bears couldn't string together enough offense to cut into the deficit.

Western New England tied the game up in fifth inning, and knocked DeLeon out of the game. Steve Buckley walked and made it to third on a double by Daniel Morin to left field. Colmenares hit a sacrifice fly to centerfield, which allowed Buckley to tag up and score. T. J. Wyrebek lined a single to right field, which scored Morin and evened the game at 3-3.

Cherry continued to battle, but the Hawks' bats stayed alive and exploded in the sixth inning, when they tallied three runs. After scoring once, Nelson came to bat and platted in two Hawks on a single down the left field line.

Wyrebek delivered again in the bottom of the seventh, as he reached on a throwing error, which allowed two runs to score. The Golden Bears still trailed 6-5, despite Wyrebek adding to his totals with three RBI.

Cherry faced three batters in the eighth inning, ending it with a double play.

Wyrebek walked to lead of the bottom of the ninth, but Jimmy Hamilton worked his way out of the jam and recorded the save.
