Baseball Picks Off the Pride

Box Score BRISTOL, R.I. – The Roger Williams University Baseball team picked off the Pride of Springfield College 7-5.  The Hawks improve to 5-14 overall while the Pride drop 2-13.

Kaelan Rayner (Westerly, R.I.) started for the Hawks, dealing 4.1 innings, giving up six hits, three runs and striking out two, as the sophomore picked up his first win of the season. Troy DeLeon (East Hampton, Conn.) registered the five-out save, as he only allowed one hit and struck out a pair.

For Springfield, senior pitcher Oliver Collette (Spencer, Mass.) got the nod, as he threw 2.0 innings, giving up two hits, four runs and struck out a pair. Mitchell Goldman (Uxbridge, Mass.) came on in relief, pitching 1.0 innings, while giving up one hit, before Dan Green (Oakland, N.J.) took the rubber and hurled 4.0 innings, giving up four hits and three runs. Kenny Manero (Hudson, Mass.) finished off the game, pitching 1.0 innings, striking out one.

Roger Williams struck first in the bottom of the second inning, as Jamie Timothy (Cohasset, Mass.) cracked a double to left center, driving in Reid Nelson (Wallingford, Conn.) to give the Hawks a 1-0 lead, before Matt Moskal (Hamden, Conn.) reached on an error, allowing Timothy to score from third, resulting in a 2-0 advantage.
In the next frame, the Hawks added to its lead as Shawn Cariglio (Milford, Conn.) singled to left, plating Kevin Baker (Wilbraham, Mass.) and Caulin Rogers (Gloucester, Mass.) to give Roger Williams a 4-0 lead.
In the top of the fourth, Peter Marsicano (Allentown, N.J.) got the Pride on the board, as he singled, driving home Billy Paskowski (Wappinger Falls, N.Y.), before Brent Poulin (Atascadero, Calif.) was able to cross the plate due to an errant throw to cut Springfield's deficit in half.

After JP Peters (Guilford, Conn.) drove in Shane O'Leary (Kings Park, N.Y.) to bring the Pride to within one in the top of the fifth, Chris Travers (East Freetown, Mass.) doubled down the left-field line, scoring Nelson, before Bryan Terzian cranked a sacrifice fly to center, helping the Hawks to regain its three-run lead.

Corey Wilcox (Montville, Conn.) scored on a wild pitch in the top of the sixth to bring the Pride back to within a pair, before Marsicano drew a walk, which brought in CJ Monroe (Wolcott, Conn.) to cut the Pride's deficit back to one.

In the bottom of the seventh, Cariglio hit a solo home run to put the Hawks up, 7-5, as Springfield was unable to erase the margin and took the loss.

The Hawks return to the diamond on Saturday, April 11 in Newport, R.I. to take on the Seashawks of salve Regina in a Commonwealth Coast Conference doubleheader that starts at noon.
