Club Men's Lacrosse reaches round of 16 in championships

The Roger Williams University Club Men's Lacrosse team finished their inaugural season in solid fashion, reaching the round of 16 in the National College Lacrosse League National Championships.

The Hawks were seeded #3 in the four-team New England/Metro New York regional after posting a 3-2 regular season record in their division. They traveled to New Paltz, New York Sunday April 26 for the regional event. In the round of 32 they defeated #2 seed, New York Metro champ and regional host SUNY-New Paltz 11-6.

With about eight minutes left in the third quarter the Hawks were leading 5-4, but went on to score the next five goals, including four straight in the first nine minutes of the fourth quarter,  to clinch the 11-6 win. Sophomore Chris Schmidt (Holliston, Mass.) tallied four goals and an assist, junior Mike Kemmy (Bristol, R.I.) had three goals and two assists, freshman Zack Morin (Woodstock, Vt.) tallied a hat trick and sophomore attack man Corey Annunziata (Amherst, NH) had a goal and three assists.

Sophomore goalie Daimeon Baity (Brookfield, Conn.) made nine saves, junior face off middie JP Abarca (Old Lyme, Conn.) won 13 out of 20 face-offs. Long stick midfielder Anthony D'Amico (Grafton, Mass.) and defenseman Matt Broadley (Tyngsboro, Mass.) played strong games as well.

In the other regional semi-final #1 seed Quinnipiac University defeated #4 seed New York University 15-1. That set-up the regional championship final between the Hawks and Quinnipiac with a berth in the National Elite Eight May 2-3 at Penn State University in State College, PA on the line. The teams battled to a scoreless first half as the Hawk defense and Baity held strong against an onslaught of attack from Quinnipiac. They were able to score two minutes into the second quarter, however, and led just 5-2 at the half despite taking 35 shots on net.

They continued to pour it on in the second half and eventually wore down the Hawks, pulling away with an 11-3 decision and earning the Elite Eight berth. Baity made 21 saves for the Hawks. Kemmy had a goal and an assist, Morin and Brady Schoner (Suffield, Conn.) added a goal each and Annunziata had an assist. Midfielders Raffi Mouroukian (Niskayuna, N.Y.), Dylan Chorlton (Woburn, Mass.) and Nick Edwards (Holliston, Mass.) played solid games as did defenseman Braden Ridgway (Hopkinton, Mass.) and Mitch Beck (Smithfield, R.I.).
