Volleyball falls in two matches to Conn. Col. and Amherst

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 BRISTOL, R.I. - The Roger Williams University Women's Volleyball team fell in a pair of non-conference matches to Connecticut College and Amherst College. The Hawks dropped a hard-fought 3-2 match to the Camels before a 1-3 setback to Amherst. On Court 2, Amherst took the opening match 3-0 against Bridgewater State, followed by Connecticut College also notching a 3-0 win over Bridgewater State.
 
The Camels opened up the match taking the first set 25-22. The Hawks stormed back with a 25-12 victory to knot the match at one apiece. Roger Williams earned a 25-18 win in the third set and appeared to be headed towards the match win in the fourth set. RWU had match point on three separate occasions in the game, but the Camels managed to pull out the 29-27 win to bring it to a fifth and deciding set. In the final game, Connecticut College broke a nine-all tie and closed the match on a 6-2 run to come away with the comeback victory.
 
The Camels' Alex McDevitt (Medfield, Mass.) led all with 20 kills to go along with eight digs and two solo blocks. Sam Hunter (Palos Verdes, Calif.) added 15 kills and 16 digs, while Katia Elisman (Lake Forest, Ill.) finished with a team-high 43 assists.
 
Roger Williams' Kristen Boyer (Ephrata, Pa.) and Elizabeth Flaherty (Sloatsburg, N.Y.) each tallied 13 kills, with Boyer adding 23 digs. Maria Batas (Merrick, N.Y.) notched a match-high 25 digs, with Josalyn Benson (Phoenix, Ariz.) going for 44 assists and 11 digs.
 
In the second match of the evening, Amherst jumped out to a quick 5-0 lead and led wire-to-wire to take the first set 25-17. The second set saw the Lord Jeffs notch another 25-17 victory over RWU. In the third set, Roger Williams rallied from a six-point deficit and scored the final three points of the set to pull out a 25-22 win. In the final set, Amherst pulled away late from RWU for the win. The Lord Jeffs led 12-9 before using an 8-1 run to take a commanding ten-point lead en route to the 25-12 win.
 
Lizzie Ahern (Corte Madera, Calif.) and Maggie Danner (Newport Beach, Calif.) each finished with 14 kills for the Lord Jeffs, while Nicole Carter (Irvine, Calif.) added 41 assists and 16 digs.
 
Kristen Neff (Delmar, N.Y.) tallied 11 kills for RWU, with Boyer adding six kills, two aces, and 12 digs. Benson and Nicole Weber (Poulsbo, Wash.) notched 23 and eight assists, respectively.
 
In the first match on Court 2, Amherst opened the match on a 6-0 run and rolled to a 25-7 win in the opening set of its match against Bridgewater State. The Bears fared a bit better in the second set, but the Lord Jeffs still claimed a 25-15 win. Amherst would then go on to claim the match with a 25-18 win in the final set.
 
Ahern and Mariaalexa Natsis (Los Angeles, Calif.) added nine and eight kills, respectively for Amherst, with Carter adding 19 assists and Kate Bres (Houston, Texas) adding 12 assists.
 
Hannah Maymon (Narragansett, R.I.) led Bridgewater State with six kills and ten digs. Charleyne Panner (Gilford, N.H.) added 18 assists and seven digs.
 
In the second match on Court 2, Bridgewater State gave a strong effort but came up just short to Connecticut College in the opening set, falling 22-25. The Camels followed up with a 25-18 win in the second set before closing out the evening with a 25-12 win over the Bears.
 
Maymon and Clara Goncalves (Dennis, Mass.) tied for the team lead on the Bears with eight kills each. Panner finished with 22 assists, while Cassidy Tyros (Chelmsford, Mass.) logged 18 digs.
 
All four teams will be in action at Johnson & Wales on Saturday. Roger Williams will face off against Western Connecticut State and Gustavus Adolphus, Bridgewater State will play Johnson & Wales and Salve Regina. Amherst takes on Salve Regina and Johnson & Wales, and Connecticut College faces Gustavus Adolphus and Western Connecticut State.
