Women's volleyball splits on the second day of the JWU Invitational

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Roger Williams University Women's Volleyball team split on the second day of the Johnson and Wales University Invitational, defeating Western Connecticut State University 3-0, and taking Gustavus Adolphus to five but falling short in the fifth set.
 
The Hawks' had a slow start against Western Connecticut State University in the first set, down 7-3. After a service run by Abby Gordon (Glastonbury, Conn.) the hawks tied it at 18-18 to then finish the match. In the second set the Hawks would keep a 3 point lead until pulling away to finish it 25-17. In the last set against Western Connecticut State, both teams would go point for point until the hawks would finish the match 25-23.
 
In the second match, the Hawks faced off against Gustavus Adolophus, who gave RWU its toughest match of the weekend. The Hawks came out strong, taking the first set 25-16. The Hawks used it's strength in it's offense to keep the Gusties out of Rhythm the whole set. The Hawks would then lose the second set, but coming back to take the third set 26-24. In the fourth set the Hawks had a slow start giving Gustavus Adolphus a seven point lead. The Hawks would then come back, with a service run from sophomore Maria Bates (Merrick, N.Y.). Gustavus Adolphus would take the fourth set 25-17. In the fifth set the Gusties jumped out with a great start, going 6-0, before the Hawks would decide to fight back. The Hawks came back 9-12 until the Gusties would pull away for the win 10-15.
 
Roger Williams (4-5) will play Tufts University on Wednesday September 16th at 7pm in the Roger Williams Campus Rec Center.
