Corsairs halt win streak for Women’s Basketball

Box Score BRISTOL, R.I. - The Roger Williams University Women's Basketball team suffered its first loss of 2016 Monday evening, as the University of Massachusetts-Dartmouth logged a 60-46 road win over the Hawks in non-conference action.

RWU began the game strong, jumping out to a quick 5-0 lead in the first quarter on a Katie Lowerre (Sharon, Mass.) three and Emma Klis (East Northport, N.Y.) layup. Nakira Examond (New Bedford, Mass.) knocked down a jumper with 3:41 to give the Corsairs their first lead of the game (10-9).

Rachel Battista (Johnston, R.I.) came back with a pair of free throws a minute later to put RWU back on top, but those would be the Hawks' final points of the period, with UMass-Dartmouth closing out the quarter on a 7-0 run to go into the second period up by six.

The Corsairs built the lead up to as many as 11 in the second quarter to hold the Hawks at bay. RWU crept back as close as six (21-27) but the Corsairs managed to go back up by 11 by the end of the half, leading 32-21 at the break.

After a third quarter that saw both team shoot under 30 percent, the Hawks mounted a late fourth-quarter rally. Trailing by as many as 18 in the half, RWU used an Anna Walther (Northhampton, Mass.) three to pull within ten (44-54) with just under three minutes left.

However, UMass-Dartmouth's Danyel Gonzalez (Providence, R.I.) quickly quashed the momentum with an and-one layup. RWU managed only two more points over the remainder of the game as UMD left with the win.

Megan Ronaghan (North Attleboro, Mass.) finished with a game-high 21 points along with eight rebounds and four blocks. Alicia Kutil (Franklin, Mass.) added ten points and seven boards, while Colleen Kane (Arlington, Mass.) went for four points and ten boards.

Bridget Quilty (Duxbury, Mass.) logged another double-double, going for 15 points and ten rebounds. Angelica Ariola (Prospect, Conn.) finished with 13 points and four boards.

Roger Williams (7-6) heads to Curry on Thursday while UMass-Dartmouth (9-3) hosts Eastern Connecticut State on Wednesday.
