Box Score BRISTOL, R.I. - The Roger Williams University Women's Basketball team was unable to match up against the late comeback from Western New England, falling 71-71 in overtime to the Golden Bears Saturday afternoon in Commonwealth Coast Conference competition.
Roger Williams started the game off with a strong lead. The Hawks ended the first quarter with a twelve-point lead (23-11). Junior
Katie Lowerre (Sharon, Mass.) scored 11 points in the quarter, hitting her first five shots and going 5-for-6 in the period.
In the second quarter, Western New England University began to rally. The game continued with back and forth baskets, while the Hawks maintained their lead to end the first half 42-30.
Roger Williams led the Golden Bears by nine points at the outset of the final quarter. The Golden Bears continued to rally, as Amanda Lopez (Windsor, Conn.) had a crucial layup for the Golden Bears at 6:02 to tie the game for the first time . The game remained tied until
Mariah Nicholas (Acushnet, Mass.) and Lowerre brought Roger Williams ahead with back-to-back shots. Western New England's Chelsea Vujs (Berlin, Conn.) came back with a layup and a pair of free throws to tie the game back at 62.
Western New England called a 30 second timeout with just under a minute left in the game but could not get the go-ahead basket. The Hawks had a chance to tie the game but the attempt missed to end regulation with the game still tied 62-62.
In overtime, Western New England managed to take a four-point lead while holding the Hawk offense in check. Trailing by two with eight seconds left, Ariola brought the Hawks within one with two successful free throws to make it 71-72.
RWU put the Golden Bears at the line for two on the other end and caught a break off of two missed free throws. However, the team called a timeout with none left, leading to a technical foul and another WNE free throw.
The game came down to the final second with a three- point shot by
Angelica Ariola (Prospect, Conn.) but could not get it to go in.
Vujs led Western New England with 27 points, along with eight rebounds. Emily Anderson (Rocky Hill, Conn.) also put up 14 points and four rebounds.
Lowerre had an impactful game for the Hawks, leading the team with 20 point, as well as four assists. Nicholas scored 16 points with nine rebounds, while Ariola scored 14 points.
Bridget Quilty (Duxbury, Mass) had a strong defensive game for the Hawks leading with ten rebounds.
Roger Williams(11-8, 8-4 CCC) will travel to Dudley this Tuesday to play Nichols College at 5:30pm. Western New England (10-8, 7-4 CCC) will travel to Boston to meet Wentworth Institute of Technology at 5:30pm.
