Field Hockey Pulls Out 2OT Win Over Fitchburg State

Box Score BRISTOL, R.I. – The Roger Williams University Field Hockey team pulled out a 3-2 double overtime win over Fitchburg State University Thursday afternoon in the team's final regular season home game.

This was the team's third meeting with the Falcons in program history. Roger Williams now holds a 2-1 edge in the series, as RWU won the first-ever meeting 1-0 back in 2014.

Roger Williams' defense had its work cut out for them early on. The Falcons put up ten shots in the first ten minutes of play, most of them with a strong chance to score. However, timely stops by Mya Lunn (Marion, Mass.), as well as defensive saves by MaryKathryn Slattery (Old Orchard Beach, Maine) and Abby Treweek (Lakeville, Mass.), kept the game scoreless over that stretch.

The Falcons appeared to have scored the first goal of the game in the 22th minute, with Molly Richard (Leominster, Mass.) found Madeline Hoffman (Mansfield, Mass.) for a shot in the left corner. However, the referee ruled that the ball never left the circle, so the goal was disallowed.

On the transition by Roger Williams, Lillian McNeil (Marshfield, Mass.) was able to get the ball to Meghan Curran (West Milford, Conn.). Curran secured the pass and notched the goal for RWU to put the Hawks up by one.

RWU's lead lasted less than two minutes, as the Falcons tied the game in the 26th minute. Erin Morrissey (Hubbardston, Mass.) set up Richard off a penalty corner with a clear shot. Richard blasted a shot to the left corner of the goal, tying the contest at one apiece.

Shortly into the second half, the Hawks regained the lead. In the 39th minute, Treweek got possession of the ball after a penalty corner. She passed it across the face of the goal, finding Curran who would score her second goal of the game.

Fitchburg State would not be deterred, coming back with a goal in the 47th minute, with Nicole Fors (Lunenburg, Mass.) setting up Casey Noonan (Feeding Hills, Mass.) with a pass on the left side. Noonan turned and put one in the back of the goal, knotting the contest at two. Neither side would score over the remainder of regulation, forcing the game into overtime.

In the first OT, both teams failed to capitalize on a potential game winning goal. It would not be until just under four minutes to play in the second extra period where the Hawks came with the crucial score. Juliana Miccile (Upton, Mass.) got the ball on a transition chance and made her way into the circle. She would spin and fire a shot that sailed just into the left corner of the net to send the Hawks home happy.

Lunn tied a career high with 14 saves on the evening, while Brittany Linane (Portsmouth, N.H.) had five stops in the loss.

Roger Williams (4-14) will head to Nichols College Saturday for the team's last game of the regular season. Fitchburg State (13-5) will host Plymouth State Saturday in the Little East Quarterfinals.
