Men’s Soccer Falls In CCC Quarters

Box Score SPRINGFIELD, Mass. – The Western New England University men's soccer team secured a spot in the Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) semifinals with a 3-1 victory over Roger Williams University this afternoon at Suprenant Field.

Junior forward Troy Remillard (Palmer, Mass.), who was named to the All-CCC first team earlier this week, fueled the Western New England offense with two goals and put a team-high four shots on target. Senior goalkeeper Kevin Strobel (Rockland, Mass.) stopped seven of the eight shots that he faced.

Remillard staked the Golden Bears to a 1-0 lead in the 25th minute, as he took a pass from senior defender Brandon Bolger (Saratoga, N.Y.) and beat Roger Williams freshman goalkeeper Edmund Geschickter (Brookline, Mass.) with a shot to the lower left corner of the net.

Roger Williams equalized in the 58th minute, when senior forward Dan Kelly (Miller Place, N.Y.) headed home a free kick taken by sophomore midfielder Riley Parnham (Califon, N.J.).

Just under three minutes later, sophomore midfielder Nick Liccardi (Hopewell Junction, N.Y.) put Western England back in front for good, scoring on a header following senior Kory Caster's (Wilbraham, Mass.) free kick.

In the 63rd minute, Remillard netted an insurance goal with the help of an assist from senior forward Scott Trautwein (Pequannock, N.J.).

With the win, Western New England climbs above the .500 mark for the first time this season. The Golden Bears have won four straight games dating back to October 18.

Roger Williams outshot Western New England 14-13, but the two teams were even with four corner kicks each.

Remillard's two goals this afternoon give him a career-high 13 for the season. He leads the Golden Bears and ranks third in the CCC with 29 points.

Fourth-seeded Western New England (10-9) will take on the winner of the Endicott/Eastern Nazarene matchup on Wednesday.
