Volleyball Serves Up Win Over Wentworth

Box Score BRISTOL, R.I. - The Roger Williams University Women's Volleyball rolled off another Commonwealth Coast Conference shutout win, this time picking up a 3-0 (25-21, 25-16, 25-21) victory over Wentworth Institute of Technology.

The Hawks kicked off the contest on a 5-1 run for an early lead. RWU would build the advantage to 11-4 on a service ace by Maria Batas (Merrick, N.Y.) and forcing a Leopard timeout. RWU continued to maintain the edge, not allowing Wentworth to come closer than four for most of the rest of the set. However, the Leopards made one last push at the end, scoring four straight points after trailing 17-24 to pull within three and make the Hawks call a timeout. Yet Wentworth would hit the ball out of bounds to give RWU the point and the 25-21 win.

Wentworth kept things close early on in the second set, tying the game at five apiece after dropping the first two points. Yet from that point, RWU set out on a 9-0 run that included three Leopard attack errors and a pair of aces from Batas. The nine-point deficit proved to be too much, as Wentworth never came closer than six the rest of the way. Sarah McAniff (Redding, Conn.) would later put the game away 25-16 with a kill.

In the third set, both teams traded points back and forth. Wentworth managed to tie the game ten separate times over the first half of the set. Batas broker a 12-all tie with a service ace that would give the Hawks a lead they would not give back. Wentworth stayed within a four-point range of RWU, but ultimately would be set back 25-21 on a Maddie Neuberger (Remsenburg, N.Y.) kill.

Kristen Boyer (Ephrata, Pa.) logged a double-double with 12 kills and 10 digs. Julia Fields (Cortlandt Manor, N.Y.) finished with 35 assists, while Batas tallied 16 digs and four service aces.

Claire Quick (Mission Viejo, Calif.) led all with 15 kills for Wentworth. Katelyn Carlson (Stratford, Conn.) finished with 17 assists and 14 digs, while Leah Rogoz (Woodridge, Ill.) went for eight kills and 15 digs.

Roger Williams (11-5, 4-0 CCC) faces Gordon and Framingham State on Saturday, while Wentworth (13-3, 2-2 CCC) hosts UMass-Dartmouth tomorrow.
