BRISTOL, R.I. - The Roger Williams University Women's Basketball program will celebrate the memory of former Hawk Ryan Weekes '12 with the Ryan Weekes Memorial Game this Saturday in the team's matchup against Endicott at 1 pm.
The team encourages all fans in attendance to wear purple, the universal cancer color, in support of Ryan and countless others who have been afflicted by cancer. In addition, donations will be collected throughout the day towards a Roger Williams University scholarship fund to assist RWU students of color in need of financial assistance with books, meal plans, and other associated costs.
Ryan was a four-year guard for the Hawks, playing in 76 games for RWU and finishing her career with 565 points and 339 rebounds during her tenure. As a sophomore, Ryan put up some of the best numbers of her career, averaging a career-high 9.8 points and 5.6 rebounds per game. Though Ryan's senior year was unfortunately cut short after suffering a season-ending knee injury during a practice in early December, she still remained an integral part of the team with her infectious spirit and unwavering confidence.
In addition, last season the team established the Ryan Weekes '12 Coaches' Award, presented annually to the player who best embodies the spirit of Ryan Weekes, demonstrating outstanding character, work ethic, leadership, and, above all, is a selfless teammate.
"Ryan was a good basketball player, but a great person," noted Head Coach
Kelly Thompson. "She was a hard worker and an even better teammate. Ryan's sense of humor and quiet leadership will always stand out to me when I think about her."
We hope that you will join us this Saturday as we honor the memory of such a beloved Hawk.
