Baseball edges Babson College

Box Score BABSON PARK, Mass. — The Roger Williams University had a major win on Thursday night, defeating Babson College, 10-8.  Babson College nearly erased a six-run deficit before falling to the Hawks in non-conference action on Thursday afternoon at Govoni Field.

Babson, which was unbeaten in its last nine games entering the day, drops to 10-4-1 on the year, while Roger Williams is now 9-7-1 overall.

Sophomore David Lennon (Windermere, Fla.) walked and scored twice for the Beavers, who got 10 hits from eight different players. Weiss and Jaun both doubled, while first-year Brian McHale (Ramsey, N.J.) went 1-for-3 and scored twice.

Senior Kevin Baker (Wilbraham, Mass.) was 3-for-5 with a pair of doubles and two RBI, while classmate Shawn Cariglio (Milford, Conn.) doubled and homered while scoring twice and driving in a pair of runs to lead the Hawks.

After falling behind 2-0 in the top of the second, sophomore Mark Webber (Norwell, Mass.) singled with two outs and came around on Jaun's double one batter later to make it 2-1. Roger Williams scored three times in the third and then extended its advantage with a four-run fourth, punctuated by Baker's two-out double down the left field line to take a 9-2 lead.

The Beavers got a run back in the sixth and then erupted for five runs in the last of the seventh. First-year Edward Lehr (Byram Township, N.J.) drove in senior Joe Barry (Stoneham, Mass.) with a single through the left side, and sophomore pinch hitter Ryan Arena (Yorktown Heights, N.Y.) followed with an RBI knock to left to cut the deficit to 9-5. Lehr and Arena both came around to score on an error, while Barry, who led off the inning, drew a bases loaded walk to make it 9-8. The Hawks escaped further damage when senior Eric Proulx (Charlton, Mass.) got a strikeout with the bases loaded to end the threat.

The Beavers got the potential tying run into scoring position with two outs in the eighth, but senior Tyler Campo (Wrentham, Mass.), who earned a six-out save, ended the inning with one of his four strikeouts.

The Hawks are back in action Saturday, April 2nd at 12PM. They take on Wentworth in their first conference match-up of the season. The game will be held in Boston, MA.
