Hawks fall to Endicott College

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 BEVERLY, Mass. – Endicott College opened up Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) play on Sunday afternoon at North Field with a doubleheader sweep of the Roger Williams University Baseball team by scores of 2-1 (game one) and 6-3 (game two).

GAME ONE – Roger Williams 1, Endicott College 2(seven innings)

Endicott sophomore right-hander Will Ferreira (Nantucket, Mass.) tossed a complete-game three-hitter alongside one run (earned), three walks, and a game-high five strikeouts to move his record to 2-0 on the season.

Jimmy Smith (Walpole, Mass.) suffered the loss (2-3) on six innings, two runs (both earned), five walks and one strikeout.

The Gulls took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the second inning when Matthew Paola (Middlebury, Conn.) scored on the backend of a double steal attempt before Cody Hall (Rutland, Mass.) was caught stealing second (1-3-4-3-6).

Endicott added another run in third on an RBI single through the right side of the infield, which proved to be the difference as the Hawks cut the deficit in half at 2-1 on a wild pitch with runners at second and third.

Ferreira limited the damage in the frame, however, as he stranded the game-tying run at third base with a strike out looking to end the inning and Roger Williams' scoring threat.

After recording the final out of the fourth with a strikeout looking, Ferreira stymied the Hawks the rest of the way by facing only one batter over the minimum down the stretch.

GAME TWO – Roger Williams 3, Enidcott 6 (seven innings)

Gulls' reliever Davarn Nova (Buzzards Bay, Mass.) picked up the victory (2-3) as the senior right-hander pitched three shutout innings out of the pen. Owen Bautze (Sudbury, Mass.) received the no-decision on 2 2/3 innings of work (5 H, 3 R, 3 ER, 1 BB, 2 SO), while Colby Morris (Newburyport, Mass.) bridged the gap to Nova with a strong relief appearance (1 1/3 innings, 2 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 SO).

Tyler Campo (Wrentham, Mass.) was dealt the loss (1-2) through five innings of work, alongside four hits, five runs (two earned), four free passes, and a game-high six punchouts.

Roger Williams struck first in the top of the third via an RBI single to center by Kevin Baker (Wilbraham, Mass.) and a two-run double to the left-center gap from Shawn Cariglio (Milford, Conn.) to claim a 3-0 advantage.

In the bottom half of the frame, Mike Kochiss (Fairfield, Conn.) responded for the Gulls when he stung a two-out bases clearing double to right field that evened the score at 3-3. Paola, Chris Seidl (Dracut, Mass.), and Brad Rebello (Bellingham, Mass.) all scored on the play.

The Hawks threatened to retake the lead in the fourth with runners at second and third and one out, but Seidl gunned down a potential go-ahead run at home after securing a 1-3 groundout at first base to keep the score tied at 3-3.

Seidl then went on to give Endicott the lead for good in the fifth with a two-run blast to deep left field that gave the Gulls a 5-3 gap on the scoreboard. Hall also added a sacrifice fly to center in the sixth, while Nova secured the sweep over the final two innings with a key bases loaded double play (6-4-3) in the sixth and a pair of ground outs and a fly out in the seventh.

Endicott (11-7, 2-0 CCC) returns to action tomorrow against Curry on the road in CCC doubleheader action beginning at 2 p.m. Roger Williams (9-11-1, 0-4 CCC) travels to Tufts on Tuesday, April 12 for a non-conference game at 3 p.m.
