Box Score BRISTOL, R.I.— The Roger Williams University Baseball team wasn't able to pull out the win against the Beacons of UMass Boston on Wednesday evening. The two teams met earlier in the season at UMass Boston where the Hawks defeated the Beacons 17-3.
For the Beacons, Junior shortstop Dave Murphy (Plymouth, Mass.) led the offense by going 2-for-4 with two runs scored, three RBI and a walk. Freshman Kyle Boudrias (Medford, Mass.) added two hits, a run scored and two RBI, while Bryan Dupre (Chicopee, Mass.) came off the bench with two RBI in his lone plate appearance.
On the mound, sophomore Sal Frosceno (Derby, Conn.) earned his first win of the season, by going five innings. The sophomore lefty allowed four runs, three earned, on six hits and struck out seven.
Roger Williams starter Jimmy Hamilton was charged with the loss, as he went just 2.2 innings. The junior allowed four hits, three walks and five earned runs, to fall to 2-4.
After the Hawks scored an unearned run in the bottom of the second, UMass Boston struck back for five runs in the top of the third.
With the bases loaded and one out, Mantoni gave the Beacons their first lead, with a two-run single that scored Lopez and Herzog. Murphy followed with an RBI double to make it 3-1, as Lionel Danielson (St. Croix, Virgin Islands) easily scampered home. After an out and a walk to load the bases, Boudrias made it 5-2 with a two-run single that scored Murphy and Mantoni.
The Hawks got themselves back into the game in the fourth, as they struck for three runs on three hits. Jamie Timothy (Cohasset, MA) cut the deficit to 5-2 with an RBI triple and Liam Smith (Ridgefield, CT) later added an RBI single to make it 5-4.
The Beacons gave their bullpen some insurance runs in the seventh. With the bases loaded and two down, Dupre laced a pinch hit, two-out, two-run single to left-center field to plate Murphy and Anthony Searles (Shelton, Conn.).
Murphy pushed the lead out to 9-4 in the eighth, as he came through with a two-run, two-out single, to easily score Lopez and Mantoni.
The Beacons tacked on three more runs in the ninth without the benefit of a hit. With the bases loaded thanks to a walk and two hit by pitches, Lopez drove in Boudrias with an RBI groundout. On the next play, Danielson reached on an error and Chris Fowler (Barnstable, Mass.) came home to score. The Beacons tacked on one final run after a pitching change, as Herzog raced home on a wild pitch.
The Hawks take the mound Saturday April 16th at 3:30PM as they take on conference opponent, Western New England.
