The Hawks split with Curry for CCC double header

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

Milton, MA – The Roger Williams University baseball team split a doubleheader with home team Curry College 6-0 and 1-5. The Hawks move to 11-14-1 overall and 1-6 in the CCC.

Game One

The first game started slowly with both starters allowing only a lone hit to the opposing batters over the first two innings. The Hawks opened the scoring in the top of the third with a sacrifice fly from sophomore Matt Moskal (Hamden, Conn.) to score freshman Liam Smith (Ridgefield, Conn.) who started the inning reaching on an error.

With two runners in scoring position, senior Jamie Timothy (Cohasset, Mass.) grounded out to the shortstop to score freshman Eli Camner (Hamden, Conn.) who earlier singled himself on. Senior Kevin Baker (Wilbraham, Mass.) followed with an RBI of his own, reaching on an error and scoring freshman Chris Bosco (North Andover, Mass.) to make the score 3-0. Curry's starting pitcher, junior Brian Burke got the third out of the inning but not before the damage was done.

Over the next two full innings, neither team managed to record a hit nor was there another run until senior Shawn Cariglio (Milford, Conn.) hit a three-run homerun to right field, scoring Baker and Timothy who doubled and bunted their ways on respectively. Burke responded by getting the next three batters out and after six and a half, the score was at 6-0 in favor of the Hawks.

The Colonels couldn't get anything going with their final six outs and the 6-0 score went final with Burke getting the loss in his seven-inning effort giving up six runs (only five were earned) on six hits while fanning nine batters. Sophomore Jimmy Smith (Walpole, Mass.) received the win for the Hawks, also going all seven innings, allowing no runs on two hits and eight punch outs.

Game Two

The latter half of the twin bill started similar to the first where this time, only two hits were scattered over the first three and a half innings. The Colonels made a lot of noise in the bottom half of the fourth with freshman Jack Kallinich starting things by taking a pitch to the arm with one out. Classmate Ben Lary followed him by reaching on an error with two down in the inning to bring up senior captain Tim Lathrop (Colchester, Conn.).

Lathrop delivered a single through a gaping hole between the shortstop and third baseman to plate Kallinich to open the scoring. Classmate and co-captain, John Arens (Milton, Mass.) copied Lathrop and singled through the left side to score Lary to put the Colonels ahead by a pair. After both runners advanced on a pass ball, the other senior co-captain, Kyle Connors (Stoughton, Mass.) ripped a bases clearing triple to right field to inflate their lead to four. Junior Alex McLean (Elliot, Maine) wanted to get in on the action and helped himself out by driving home Connors to attain a comfortable 5-0 lead going into his fifth inning of work.

McLean had retired all of the batters he had faced before Cariglio came to the plate and broke up his no hitter with a flare hit to center field. It would turn out to be costly as he eventually came around and scored on junior Bryan Terzian's (Westport, Conn.) double to right field to supply the Hawks with their first run of the game.

The Colonels would not need another run to come across the plate and McLean finished out the game to put the 5-1 score at a final after allowing the only earned run on three hits while striking out six on his way to collecting his first win of the season. Senior Tyler Campo (Wrentham, Mass.) was handed the loss after going three and two thirds inning allowing five runs, all unearned, on seven hits and three K's.

The Hawks will stay on the road for their next game as they are scheduled to travel to Brandeis University on Thursday afternoon for a 3 p.m. non-conference first pitch.
