Box Score BRISTOL, R.I. - The Roger Williams University Men's Soccer team was stymied in its first game of the 2016 campaign, falling 0-2 to the University of Massachusetts-Boston Thursday evening in the season opener for both teams.
UMass-Boston grabbed an early lead less than four minutes into the contest. The Beacons' Daniel Morales (San Diego, Calif.) fed a pass up the left sideline to Matheus Reis (Espirito Santo, Brazil). Reis would cross a pass to Ocane Williamson (Spanishtown St. Catherine, Jamaica), who then fired a shot that just hooked into the right corner of the net for the UMass-Boston lead.
In the 15th minute, the Hawks came close to knotting the game.
Sean Janson (Avon, Conn.) launched a long pass to
Dan Kelly (Miller Place, N.Y.) up the left sideline. Kelly didn't have a shot, but waited for
Colby Decker (Colchester, Conn.) to come from the right side. Decker corralled the pass and sent a long shot to the left side of the net, but just missed it wide.
Hawk keeper
Edmund Geschickter (Brookline, Mass.) prevented UMass-Boston from doubling its lead in the 22nd minute with a diving save to his right, then followed with a point-blank save a minute later.
UMass-Boston controlled the pace of the game from most of the first half. The Beacons swarmed the ball on a majority of Hawk possessions and prevented RWU from getting into a groove on offense.
The Beacons missed a good opportunity to add another goal in the early part of the second half. Joshua Khang (Brockton, Mass.) slipped a short pass to Edmilson Barros (Praia, Cape Verde), who sailed a one-on-one shot just high over the net.
The Hawks failed to capitalize as well in the 60th minute. A misplayed pass by the Beacon defense led a clear shot by Decker at the top of the box. However, UMass-Boston's Omar Castro-Dreher (Woonsocket, R.I.) dove to his left and managed to clear the ball away.
UMass-Boston would add an insurance goal in the 78
th minute, with Marcelo Cunha (Golania, Brazil) heading in a corner kick from Calvin Smick (Wilmington, Del.).
Castro-Dreher only needed three saves for the shutout win, while Geschickter stopped four shots in the loss.
Roger Williams (0-1-0) will host Montclair State Saturday afternoon at 1:30 p.m. in the team's annual Squad Locker Tournament. UMass-Boston (1-0-0) travels to Boston to face Wentworth Institution of Technology on Saturday as well
