Men’s Soccer Takes Draw Against Gordon

Box Score WENHAM, Mass. — Two second-half goals was not enough for Gordon Men's Soccer to earn a decision, as the Fighting Scots drew even with rival Roger Williams in the Commonwealth Coast Conference opener for both squads. RWU junior Charlie Mader (Scarborough, Maine) headed in a ball with seven minutes remaining in regulation to tie the game at two and neither team was able to put the ball in the net during overtime for a 2-2 draw.

Gordon moves to 2-1-1 on the season, while the Hawks sit at 1-3-1 through five contests. The Fighting Scots their six-game home stand to begin the season when they host nationally ranked Tufts on Wednesday at 4:30 p.m.

The Fighting Scots controlled the pace of play for the majority of a rough-and-tumble affair by immediately putting pressure on the Hawks defense on a strike by Josh Cochran (Bellville, Ohio) that went just high of the bar. In the 17th minute, Tyler Modzeleski (Cazenovia, N.Y.) looked to have his first goal of the season, but a flick on goal hit the post and out of play.

A pair of ill-timed fouls gave the visitors their first good scoring opportunity in the 19th minute and junior Sean Janson (Avon, Conn.) made the Scots play from 20 yards out. The forward curled a ball over the top of the Gordon wall and past the outstretched arms of goalkeeper Josh Spoonhour (Greencastle, Pa.) to his right.

Gordon outshot Roger Williams 7-1 in the first half and held a 3-1 advantage in corner kicks, but after 45 minutes the visitors led 1-0.

A hard foul coming out of the break on the other side provided Gordon with a golden moment to put its first point on the board. Caleb Cole (Coatesville, Pa.) knocked in his first goal of the season with a bullet to the left side of the goal, not giving Edmund Geschickter (Brookline, Mass.) a chance at a save.

The goal ignited Gordon's attack and the hosts continued to press for the go-ahead chance. Their opportunity came just five minutes following their first when Modzeleski passed an approaching Geschickter in a one-on-one situation. Danny Nkhalamba (Concord, N.H.) distributed the set up on a pass through the heart of RWU's defense.

Gordon had several attempts to put an insurance goal on the board, but came up empty in its efforts and left itself susceptible to the quick counter on the other end. With just over seven minutes to go, Chris Chieffo (North Haven, Conn.) put a cross off a corner that went to the back post. Mader rose about the Gordon defense and headed a hard ball into the top center of the goal for the equalizer.

The Hawks looked to have the game won in the first overtime period, but a goal scored off of a rebound was called back to a player in an offside position. Neither side was able to generate much offense in the second extra period and settled for a tie.

Each goalkeeper made six saves in 110 minutes.
