Wentworth Gets OT win over Men’s Soccer

Box Score BRISTOL, R.I. - Wentworth Institute of Technology earned its first Commonwealth Coast Conference victory of the 2016 season with a 1-0 overtime win over the Roger Williams University Men's Soccer team Friday evening.

The Leopards nearly struck quickly in the second minute of the game. Michael Zendan (Charlotte, N.C.) split the Hawk defense with a pass to Noah Martins (San Diego, Calif.), giving him a clear shot on net. He would get a strong shot off but pushed it too hard to the right.

For most of the half, Wentworth managed to hold off a majority of the Hawks' offensive chances. Roger Williams was held to only one shot over the first 30 minutes of play. Conversely, RWU's defense proved to be just as dominant, with Wentworth only putting up three shots total over the same span.

In the final five minutes of the half, Roger Williams put a scare into Wentworth, holding possession in box multiple times but failing to get a shot off. Both teams would go into the break at a scoreless draw.

The second half continued to be a physical battle between both teams. The Leopards held the edge in possession for most of the early part. Their persistence resulted in some close calls for Roger Williams. Wentworth had a pair of chances in the 70th and 71st minute to tack the first score on the board. However, both times the Leopards were denied on excellent saves by Hawk keeper Edmund Geschickter (Brookline, Mass.).

The Leopards made one last gasp to end the game in regulation in the 87th minute, but was denied thanks to a heads-up clear by John Ryan (Southbury, Conn.).

In the 94th minute, Wentworth's Emmett Basaca (San Diego, Calif.) almost ended the game, bending a long shot from the right side. It had the correct angle but was a bit too high as it glanced off the top left corner of the post.

The golden goal would come two minutes later after a Hawk foul set up a Leopard free kick. Zendan tapped the ball back to James Morrison (New South Wales, Austraila) who then fired a shot that Geschickter was able to get a hand on. However, he wasn't able to push the ball far out enough as it rolled just into the left corner of the net to send the visitors home with the win.

Matthew Sekerak (Winthrow, Maine) only needed one save to earn the shutout win, as the Leopards held RWU to only three shots on the night. Geschickter made five stops in the hard-luck loss.

Roger Williams (1-5-1, 0-1-1 CCC) will step out of conference play Wednesday as the Hawks take on Wheaton College at 7:00pm. Wentworth (4-2-2, 1-0-1 CCC) will travel to MIT for a road game on the same date and time.
