Box Score BRISTOL, R.I. - The Roger Williams University Men's Soccer team collected a 1-0 non-conference victory over Wheaton College Wednesday evening on Bayside Field.
The win marks the first victory for the Hawks over the Lyons in the past three attempts, including
James Greenslit's first win over his alma mater as RWU head coach.
Roger Williams tallied the first score of the game at the ten-minute mark for a quick 1-0 lead. Tyler Kuckenbecker (Wellesley, Mass.) earned possession of the ball from about 30 yards out and chipped a pass over the Lyon defense and to
Spencer Thibodeau (Kennebunkport, Maine). Thibodeau took the pass inside the right side of the box and crossed a shot into the left corner of the net.
Despite trailing, Wheaton managed to obtain a number of legit scoring chances that just sailed too far wide. Amara Sesay (Bronx, N.Y.) and Louis Chavez (Porterville, Calif.) each put up two shots in the period that had strong velocity but just hooked too far of the net.
Wheaton entered the second half still trailing by one despite holding an 11-5 advantage on shots.
Wheaton came very close to tying up the game in the 66th minute. Sesay chipped a pass to Roni Diniz (Brockton, Mass.), just staying onside. He put a point-blank shot on goal from less than five yards out. However, he directed it right at Hawk keeper
Edmund Geschickter (Brookline, Mass.).
Five minutes later, Wheaton just missed another chance to knot the game on a shot by Sesay. Adam Waks (Acton, Mass.) sent a shot pass backwards to Sesay, who put up a falling one-timer shot. Unfortunately for the Lyons, his shot bounced off the right post.
Wheaton made one last rally in the final minutes of the game but could not get the game-tying score, as the Hawks held on for the win.
Geschickter stayed active in net, making seven saves for his second shutout of the year. Lyon keeper James Bailey (Groton, Mass.) stopped four shots in the loss.
On Saturday, Roger Williams (2-5-1) travels to take on Endicott while Wheaton (5-3-1) will host WPI.
