Box Score PROVIDENCE, R.I. – For the second day in a row, the Johnson & Wales University men's soccer team scored three second-half goals on its way to victory. The Wildcats took on Roger Williams for the first time since 2009 and downed the Hawks 3-1 on Sunday.
Johnson & Wales continues to be a force at home on the turf at the Scotts Miracle-Gro Athletics Complex. The Wildcats have 32-2-5 record since opening the complex in 2013 including 22-0-1 versus conference opponents.
A strong wind favored Roger Williams in the first half as
Charlie Mader struck for a goal in the 45th minute. Off a restart,
Lucas Watt sent in the free kick which Mader headed into the goal. Thanks to stout defense from the Wildcats, scoring opportunities were limited for the Hawks as they were outshot 18-7.
Johnson & Wales got the equalizer less than 10 minutes into the second half. Teagan Drake (Waterbury, Vt.) passed a through ball to Yohann Assouramou (Cotonou, Benin) who sent in through the box back to Drake he tapped it in for the goal.
Drake picked up his third point of the day when he directed a free kick to rookie Erik Schneider (Plantsville, Conn.) who headed it into the net for the eventual winning goal. Schneider almost had a second goal in the 73 minute but his shot hit the crossbar. Luckily, Andrew Vecere (Wayne, NJ) was there to collect the rebound and score the insurance goal. Vecere has scored a goal in three-straight contests.
It was a relatively slow day for JWU keeper Nicholas Mancini (Toms River, NJ) as he only had to make two saves to collect his fifth victory of the year. RWU netminder
Nick Nelson made nine saves, but gave up the three goals.
The Wildcats are off for nearly a week as they don't play again until October 1 when they travel to Saint Joseph's (ME) for a 2 p.m. start.
