Men’s Soccer Falls To Montclair State In Squad Locker Classic

| Box Score 2 BRISTOL, R.I. - The Roger Williams University Men's Soccer team was downed 4-1 by Montclair State University in the first day of the 2016 Squad Locker Classic. Clark logged a 2-0 win over Rhode Island College in the opener.

In the RWU/Montclair State game, the Red Hawks wasted little time getting on the scoreboard, scoring in the opening minute. Mike Olla (Bloomfield, N.J.) slipped a short pass to his left to a streaking Rafael Terci (Union, N.J.). Terci found himself in a one-on-one match-up against the keeper before chipping a short shot to the right side of the net.

The Hawks would not be deterred, as the team struck back in the 12th minute. Chris Chieffo (North Haven, Conn.) booted a long cross into the penalty area to an open Colby Decker (Colchester, Conn.). Decker managed to fire a shot to the left side of the net, just past the Red Hawk goalie and knot the score at one apiece.

RWU came close to taking the lead in the 16th minute, Sean Janson (Avon, Conn.) found himself with the ball 30 yards out after a failed clear.  He put a shot on target but sailed it just a bit high.

The Red Hawks would soon come back and regain the lead with two quick goals. In the 18th minute, Michael Czyrnek (Bloomfield, N.J.) sent a long pass to Olla along the right side. He would secure the pass and make his way towards the goal, sending a shot into the left corner.

Less than a minute later, Montclair State took advantage of an RWU miscue to tally another score. The Hawk defense attempted to clear a loose ball in the box. Unfortunately, the ball would bounce off of the keeper and trickle into the net for an own goal to put Montclair State up by two.

Montclair State would take its two-goal lead into the half, but quickly extend it to three in the opening minute of the second half. Lucas Terci (Union, N.J.) caught the Hawk defense off guard with a deep shot from the left sideline. The ball caught a fortuitous bounce off the right post and rolled in for the score. That would be all the Red Hawks needed to earn their first win of the year.

Montclair State's Mike Saalfrank made two saves in 69:13 of action to earn the win. RWU's Edmund Geschickter (Brookline, Mass.) had four stops in the loss.

In the opener, good defense on the part of both teams helped keep offensive opportunities to a minimum. Clark's Zack Blais (Tiverton, R.I.) served up the first shot of the game in the tenth minute, firing a free kick from the 20 yards out. It had a chance but was snagged by RIC keeper Chris Moura (Rumford, R.I.).

Clark began to pick up the pace halfway through the period. The Cougars had a pair of good opportunities to score in the 22nd minute on shots by Julian Freschbach-Meriney (Concord, Mass.) and Sean Munroe (Silver Spring, Md.) but were turned away by Moura.

The Anchormen then came down on the other end and almost converted a goal of their own. Elimaine Seye (Providence, R.I.) had a clear look at the net off of a free kick, but headed the ball just wide right.

After a scoreless first half, the offensive pace began to pick, but timely defense by both teams kept the score tied. RIC's Dennis Vazquez managed to get a one-on-one chance with Clark keeper Alistair Richardson (Tolland, Conn.) in the 54th minute. He got a shot on net, but was punched away on a great stop by Richardson.

Two minutes later, Clark's Evan Jurkowski (Ludlow, Mass.) tried to beat Moura wide right on an open net, but a one-handed stop kept the Cougars off the board.

Clark managed to push through in the 68th minute. Blais was making a play on the ball in the box and was tripped up, leading to a penalty kick. He would bury the shot in the right corner of the net to give the Cougars a 1-0 lead.

The Cougars added one more in the 73rd minute, when Charlie Lane (Southborough, Mass.) sent a pass to Jonathan Guilherme (Oxford, Conn.) on the left side. Guilherme booted a cross to the middle to Blais, who knocked it on past a diving Moura for his second score of the game.

Both teams will be back in action tomorrow, with Rhode Island College and Montclair State playing the early game at 11 am. Roger Williams and Clark will follow at 1:30 pm.
