Box Score 2 BRISTOL, R.I. – Clark University claimed the 2016 Squad Locker Classic Championship after defeating the Roger Williams University Men's Soccer team 1-0 Sunday afternoon. In the first game of the second day of the classic, Rhode Island College earned a 2-0 win over Montclair State University.
In the second game of the day, Clark and Roger Williams faced off in a hard-fought physical battle. Both teams fought for position on the pitch throughout the day, doing a good job of limiting legitimate scoring opportunities.
Clark came close to beginning the game with a quick goal. In the fourth minute, Trevor Sheridan (Massapequa Park, N.Y.) headed a throw-in that just glanced off of the right post.
The Cougars later had another opportunity to score first in the 15th minute. Zack Blais (Tiverton, R.I.) sent a nice cross to Sheridan on the left side of the goal, but Sheridan sent his shot just wide left.
The Hawks had a close call of their own in the 22nd minute, with
Colby Decker (Colchester, Conn.) securing possession of the ball on the right side of the box. He would fire a shot on line to the net, but right at Cougar keeper Connor Maguire (Dunstable, Mass.).
TJ Zirkman (Freehold, N.J.) tried to catch Hawk keeper
Nick Nelson (Madison, Conn.) off-guard in the 39th minute with a quick shot from 25 yards out, but Nelson was able to get both hands on the ball and make the save.
The Cougars finally broke through in the closing minutes of the first half to get on the board. In the 42nd minute, Jonathan Guilherme (Oxford, Conn.) corralled a loose ball at the top of the penalty area and knocked in a shot to the right corner of the net to give Clark the lead just before the end of the period.
In the second half, Clark continued to stifle the Hawk offense, holding RWU to only two shots over the first 30 minutes of play. The Hawks' best chance came in the 70th minute, when
Colby Decker (Colchester, Conn.) had a good look at a shot from just inside the left side of the penalty area. However, he would be denied by Maguire, thanks to a heads-up save.
The final ten minutes saw the Hawks attempt to make one final push to tie the game back up, including a rocket shot by
Ryan Sharby (Goffstown, N.H.) in the final minute that just sailed wide right.
In the first game between Rhode Island College and Montclair State, offensive chances for both teams were somewhat hard to come by. The Anchormen were held to only two attempted shots over the first 20 minutes of play. Though Montclair State managed to take four shots, none were a particular threat to score.
The RedHawks began to create more opportunities for themselves later in the first period, holding possession in their half with higher frequency. In the 28th minute, Jake Seaman (Montclair, N.J.) had a good look at a shot from just inside the top of the rectangle, but had it bounce off of an Anchorman defender.
Despite being out-touched by Montclair State in the latter part of the half, Rhode Island College still managed to earn the first goal of the game a minute later. RIC's Corey Chantre (Pawtucket, R.I.) gained possession of the ball by the right side of the endline. Somehow, he managed to bend a shot from his position off of the left post and into the net for a 1-0 Anchorman lead.
Rhode Island College's Dan Monteiro (Pawtucket, R.I.) later had two chances to extend the lead for RIC, but sent one shot just a bit wide and another later off of the right post. The Anchormen would go into the break with just the one-goal lead.
Montclair State continued to push early on in the second half but just could not find the tying score. In the 60th minute, Lucas Terci (Union, N.J.) had a clear shot turned away by a nice one-handed save by Anchorman keeper Chris Moura (Rumford, R.I.). Then in the 66th minute, Mike Olla (Bloomfield, N.J.) found himself with one-on-one chance with the keeper, but Moura was able to force Olla to loss possession of the ball before he was able to get a shot off.
Rhode Island College added another goal in the 74th minute off of a penalty kick. Thomas Wampler (Attleboro, Mass.) was tripped in the box, leading to a penalty shot that he converted.
