Box Score BRISTOL, R.I. – The Roger Williams University Women's Basketball team won the battle of Commonwealth Coast Conference undefeateds Wednesday evening with a 57-47 victory over Western New England University.
Both teams came into the game perfect in conference play with identical 6-0 records. With the win, Roger Williams takes over sole possession of first place in the CCC.
Western New England had a poor offensive showing in the first quarter, as the Hawks held the Golden Bears to only three points in the period. WNE missed its first seven shots of the game and finished 1-for-15 from the field in the quarter. The Hawks did not fare much better, going 4-for-14 while holding a slim 10-3 lead after the first.
The Golden Bears shooting woes continued in the second quarter, going 0-for-7 on the first seven attempts. The Hawks managed to go up by as many as 15 (18-3) before a three-pointer with 4:07 ended the scoring drought for WNE. Western New England would hit four of their final five shots of the quarter, but the Hawks still held a ten-point lead going into halftime.
WNE rallied back in the third quarter, eventually taking a 30-28 lead with just over four minutes to play in the period. However, the Hawks would hold the Golden Bears scoreless over the remainder of the quarter while scoring five more points to take a slim 33-30 advantage going into the final quarter.
Roger Williams managed to keep Western New England at bay over the final period, not letting WNE come closer than five in the quarter. RWU held the Golden Bears without a point over a three-minute stretch late in the game to extend their lead to ten, en route to the win.
Bridget Quilty (Duxbury, Mass.) notched a double-double with 17 points and 11 rebounds, with
Anna Walther (Northampton, Mass.) adding 15 points and three assists.
Mariah Nicholas (Acushnet, Mass.) tallied eight points and three boards off the bench.
Paige Young (Berlin, Conn.) finished with 15 points and 13 rebounds for Western New England. Sammie Battaini (Leominster, Mass.) added 11 points and six assists, while Emily Anderson (Rocky Hill, Conn.) scored ten.
On Saturday, Roger Williams (9-4, 7-0 CCC) heads to Gordon while Western New England (10-3, 6-1 CCC) hosts Eastern Nazarene.
