Women’s Basketball Earns Non-Conference Win Over Wheaton

Box Score BRISTOL, R.I. – A late basket pushed the Roger Williams University Women's Basketball team to a 32-30 win over Wheaton College Monday evening in a low-scoring non-conference tilt.

Offense was hard to come by for both teams, with both squads shooting only 25.0 percent from the field. Wheaton went 12-for-48 from the floor, while Roger Williams hit only 11 of their 44 attempts.

The game went scoreless over the first three-plus minutes of play before Emily Cuthbertson (Hudson, N.H.) hit a three for Wheaton. Roger Williams went almost five minutes without tallying a point before Bridget Quilty (Duxbury, Mass.) dropped in a layup at the 5:25 mark. The two squads combined to go 6-for-22 from the floor, culminating in a slim 6-5 lead for Roger Williams after the first quarter.

The second quarter saw the Lyons regain the advantage and build their lead to six (12-6) after holding Roger Williams without a point in the opening 3:44. Roger Williams was held to only five points in the period, as Wheaton went into halftime up 15-11.

The third quarter saw a spark on the offensive end for both teams, with RWU and Wheaton combining for 24 points. Rebecca Ritchie (Hanover, Mass.) pulled the Hawks within one with three free throws on the opening possession for RWU. Quilty would later give RWU a 19-17 lead with a layup with 6:16 left. Natalie Wind (New Canaan, Conn.) later broke a 23-all tie with a three-pointer at the 3:05 mark. Roger Williams was unable to score over the final four minutes of the quarter as Wheaton went into the final quarter with a 27-23 advantage.

Jill Bodreau (Thompson, Conn.) knocked down a jumper for Wheaton on the first possession of the fourth. However, that would be the only shot the Lyons would hit in the period as they went 1-for-11 from the floor. The Hawks struggled to take advantage of Wheaton's poor shooting but finally managed to regain the lead with 29 seconds left, as Anna Walther (Northampton, Mass.) found Sam Leone (Ashland, Mass.) open in the corner for a three to put RWU up 31-30.

Roger Williams managed to hold off Wheaton in the final 10 seconds with Leone blocking the potential game-tying shot and forcing an off-balance jumper with 0.6 seconds left.

Quility finished with seven points, six rebounds, and three steals for Roger Williams, with Leone adding six points and a pair of blocks.

Chelsea Rairdon (Westbrook, Maine) led Wheaton with seven points along with five rebounds. Ruthie Zientek (Holmdel, N.J.) finished with three points and seven boards.

Roger Williams (13-4) hosts Nichols College on Wednesday, while Wheaton (3-16) travels to Mount Holyoke on Saturday.
