Nine In A Row For Women’s Basketball

Box Score BRISTOL, R.I. – The Roger Williams University Women's Basketball rolled off its ninth straight win Wednesday evening with a 59-53 victory over Nichols College. The ninth straight victory for the Hawks is the team's longest win streak since the 2014-15 season, when RWU logged a ten-game unbeaten streak.

Though the Hawks won by 24 in the first meeting between these two teams, tonight's game was much more evenly matched with three ties and seven lead changes.

Nichols kept pace with Roger Williams throughout the opening stanza, grabbing the lead twice in the period. The Hawks would eventually come away with a 17-13 lead at the end of the first quarter.

Nichols managed to knot the game at 20 in the second quarter before gaining the lead on a layup by Amy Assad. Nichols would hold on to the advantage until the final second of the half when Sam Leone (Ashland, Mass.) beat the buzzer with a layup to give RWU a 28-27 lead.

The Hawks began to pull away in the third, opening the period on an 11-2 run, capped by a Bridget Quilty (Duxbury, Mass.) layup for a 39-29 lead with 6:10 left in the quarter. Nichols pulled back within four but would still trail by nine going into the fourth.

In the fourth, a pair of free throws from senior Brittany Donovan (Newport, R.I.), followed by a jumper by McDaniel with 3:29 to go, brought the Bison to within one at 54-53.

The Hawks answered with a pair of free throws at the other end to regain a three-point lead, and the Bison went scoreless on their next three possessions. Quilty finally made them pay with a layup with 30 seconds to go, which stretched the lead to five en route to the win.

Quilty led Roger Williams with 19 points, while Leone notched her first collegiate double-double with ten points and 10 rebounds. Teagan Dunn (Burlington, Conn.) added six points and ten boards as well.

Anna McDaniel (Taunton, Mass.) scored 14 points for Nichols, with Allison Cerrato (Rockland, Mass.) and Brooke Packard (Dudley, Mass.) each chipping in with eight points.

Roger Williams (14-4, 11-0 CCC) will honor the memory of former player Ryan Weekes '12 on Saturday when the team hosts Eastern Nazarene College. Nichols (2-16, 2-9 CCC) will welcome Gordon College on Saturday as well.
